It has been puzzling me for the longest time because some of my rabbits look blue and others are blue with a rosy sheen.

So what is the difference?

Blue is the dilute of black. Opal is the dilute of chestnut.

:yeahthat: but also, opal is agouti and blue is self.

If the ones with a "rosy sheen" are lighter than your blues, they are lilacs, which is the dilute of chocolate.

So lilac is what I have with the rose sheen, so got that. :D

Blue, is it blue all the way down the hair shaft?

And how does one tell with opal? Is it the one with three different bands of color on the hair shaft?

Sorry to be a pest but this color thing is a bugger to me, being ever so slightly color blind in the green/blue color spectrum.

I will go look at the color matching guide again too. I feel like a cartoon person with steam coming off my head and eyes spinning.

Anything agouti will have banded hairs and light belly (except specially bred reds) along with markings around the eyes and ears. You can get otters/martens that are in between agouti and self. They lack any banded hairs and tend to be a different color along the edges of the ears and the eye circles depending what they are but they still have those markings and the different colored belly. Self are essentially one solid color but a few patterns can impact self like rabbits with dark points (sable, himi... ) can still be self and usually are. They will not have the agouti or otter pattern. Torts are the self version of agouti red/orange.

So self blue would be blue on the belly, feet and all up the hair shaft? And otter/marten would have no banded hair but be different on belly? And agouti would be like otter/marten but have banded hair?

And...a blue steel will look somewhere between blue and opal.
Sometimes like a self with ticking, sometimes like an opal with lesser markings, or anywhere in between.

I think I have it (maybe  ) so will be better able to name the colors in my ad.

Thanks guys! :D

If I ever get time to breath I will learn to upload pictures  as they really do make a difference.
