I picked up a rabbit from a breeder about a month ago and its eye looked irritated but she said it was only from the fur (it is a Lionhead) so I went ahead and trimmed around the eye and of course the eye looked better for a few days and now is still red and puffy. This same rabbit has had soft stool since I had it, enough to warrant having to bathe it one day and groom it down there frequently. I was hoping it was a transition thing but it is about a month now and same problem. Today I went out there and she appeared to be a lot more listless than yesterday. Eyes closed even after I opened her cage so she obviously is going down hill. I am going to pick up some Corrid and something for the eye at Tractor Supply but didn't know if I should do something else instead? The stool isn't watery, just soft. Thank you!

Does she get unlimited hay? I would try this first if anything is amiss with their poop.

Hm, there could be a dental problem, causing both, a runny eye and digestion problems.

I have one who is not feeling well, and I have started to give Pen G injections. Hes had unlimited hay (once I realized he probably wasn't allergic to it and needed to have it with the Pen G) and oatmeal as well as pellets, and is eating and drinking well. You can also give a little banana as it is binding. Hes not improving at a rapid pace but is slightly getting better in some areas. I cant tell if he was just kept in unclean conditions and needs some good TLC or will have a chronic low immune system forever. Trying the Pen G for a total of 6 days, 1/4 CC or ML (same thing) once a day. I also used DE for mites and have been putting a warm towel over his eyes routinely to try and flush them out. You can also use non-steroidal over the counter human eye drops. Its hard to say for sure how much to interfere, and you certainly don't want to promote a disease and get the rest of the group sick. Mine does not have the snuffles, which I understand is the main way to spread Pasturella, although it can be spread through any contact or other ways, but I have decided if my starts sneezing that's it, I will dispose of him. Right now I already have $50+invested in him, so I decided $20 more or so wouldn't hurt to try and see if we can help him get well. I have also heard ACV and pineapple juice is a natural immune booster and chamomile tea is a good natural treatment for their eyes. I am also interested in tying essential oils, provided I don't have to buy any but could use something I have on hand:)

Bummer sorry your bunny is having problems:(

Bunnies with any health issues whatsoever go on my no sale list. I had one kit a while back who developed weepy eye. I separated her early to keep the rest of the litter from having contact with it. She stressed immediately and developed gut problems that never resolved. Treating with corrid is not a bad idea and maybe try some probiotics and free choice hay. Most of the squishy soft poop I've personally experienced has been from gut flora problems. I did end up having to cull Sweetie but oh man is it hard culling a bunny you've been nursing along. No way of knowing what or how that breeder handled this rabbit, or if it had problems before.

-- Tue Mar 01, 2016 12:55 pm --

Listlessness and eyes closed is not a good sign though :(

I brought her inside and have been using terramycin on the eye and monitoring her food intake a little better. Her poop seems better and she seems to have more energy. Her eye still seems bad. I paid a small fortune for her and brought her with the eye problem from a very big name in the breed so I'm hoping they wouldn't intentionally pass of very sickly kits and I am willing to think I did something to make the situation worse. Hopefully she is better soon.
