I had an earlier post about my trip from NC to WI for a wedding in August... And how on the way back I was going to stop by some rabbitries to get some new rabbits :p Right now, we are stopping by one SF rabbitry in Verona. I really want some tri color Rexes but I haven't been able to find many available.

Is there anyone who raises tri color Rex (Standard/American- not mini) rabbits? If you'd be willing, could you tell me the city/town that's closest to you? Then I could see if I can fit it into my route. I'm looking in NC, western VA, western WV, OH, IL, IN, and WI. And also eastern TN. We'd probably be going by your rabbitry on Sunday, August 11th. I'm looking for tri color and harlequin.

Also, I'm looking for a really good red Rex rabbit.

Thanks, and hopefully I will get new Rex rabbits and meet a fellow RT member!

I haven't seen any that far south. I found a few up by my aunt (Wausau) that I'm going to contact when we head up there, but that's another 5 hours from where you're headed. I haven't heard from anyone local to Rockford/Beloit/Janesville.

You might want to see if you can contact Marty Adams, I believe she's her Jefferson, WI

Thanks, hopefully I can go to Marty Adams. :) Why is it that I'm having a harder time finding Rex rabbits than I did finding SF rabbits? :?
I don't think Marty Adams has a website... how can I contact her?

Sorry, you are mistaken, Marty lives WWAAAAAYYYYYY extreme northern Wisconsin.
I have rex and I know where to find some of the best rex money can buy here in wisconsin. I like Marty, but she raises obscure varieties, unless thats what you are after. Some of the top rex breeders in the nation live here. Send me a message and I can point you in the right direction.

I was about to say, get with LFG.... I got my foundation Rex from her and transported them from WI to TEXAS...thru 4 or 5 states, 6 car changes, over 4 days. They arrived in perfect shape, totally unstressed and handle the heat here like champs! LFG knows her rabbits.....

I'd like to bump this post....
I'm having terrible luck. The rabbitries that do reply (only half of them have) to my emails don't have tri or harlequins, or they don't have them available in August!! I'm really hoping that this will work out... There is one rabbitry with tri and harlequins in NC, but they are unpedigreed and not very good type or color... I probably should just get a different color, but I love the harlequins and tris!!!

Also, I'd like to add some states: WI, IL, OH, IN, and western VA and WV.

Oh yeah, I forgot to add: I'm looking for tri and harlequin Rexes. Frustratingly, I fell in love with the 2 most difficult colors to find...

AHHH! I'm about to post this in hopping mad!!!! I just got another reply "hello, Unfortunately I no longer raise Rex at all"!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm about to give up. Someone please reply... I've sent out dozens of emails, I've texted people... and most don't raise tri colors, or stopped raising any rabbits, or don't have any available in August. I've been searching for a month now...

Why don't you try a compromise.

Focus on breeding fawns and broken fawn until a nice tri or harli crops up or out cross to a big mini rex tri or harli and increase size. I would be leary of introducing the gene from a different fur breed if you want show stock. In the Rex, coat quality is as important, or more, than size so it would less of an issue.

Yeah, I'm going to start looking for red or fawn Rexes. I think I want reds instead of fawns because black/orange tri colors seem to be the most common, and (correct me if I'm wrong) I think that fawns are better for the dilute tri colors (blue/fawn and lilac/fawn), whereas reds are better with the black/orange and the chocolate/orange.

OK- Here's the plan:

I found a TN breeder who has tri colors of good type, but a little small. When their kits are ready, they are willing to have a friend transport the rabbits to Knoxville, where I can meet them. That will be about an 8 hour round trip for me... and around September time. If possible, I'll get 2 tri color does.
I need to find a really good red Rex breeder. I'll buy a red (solid or broken?) Rex (should I buy a doe or a buck?). Then I'll use the red to correct the size of the TN tri colors.

I'm leaning more toward a solid red buck. A buck, because then he can easily be used to correct most of the rabbits- I'll want to have more does than bucks. A solid red, because reds, harli's, and tri colors are the useful colors whereas charlie's are not as useful or easy to sell. Crossing the solid red with a harli would create harli's and maybe reds, and a cross with a tri color will create tri colors and harli's and possibly reds. On the other hand, if I had a broken red, then crossing to a harli would create tri colors and harli's, and possibly reds and crossing to a tri color would create tri colors, harli's, charlie's, and possibly reds (and I don't want charlie's). If I can get 2 tri color does, then I'll breed the red to the tri colors and get tri colors, harli's, and possibly reds- all the colors I need.

Sound good?

Does anyone know any red Rex breeders in WI, IL, IN, OH, or western VA or western WV?

Sounds good :D

Genetically red and fawn are almost the same = A_ B_ C_ D_ ee
but reds have more Rufus factors and 'should' have wide band = A_ B_ C_ D_ ee ww ++++

Oh- I know this shouldn't really be on this thread but...
Isn't it the wideband (and agouti) gene that usually hides the "e" gene if your rabbit has "eje"? Which would make that red really really useful...

Wideband makes a fawn rabbit look like a self and hides/eliminates the agouti markings such as white around the eyes and lighter coloured bellies.

This is why it is desired in harlequins. As it is harli breeders are winning with torts that carry two harli genes. (ej ej) to get the same effect of no white on the belly or eyes, as torts with one harli and one non-extension (ej e) will be sooty and not have good defintion.

However, I don't know if this would work in in Tri's

Oh, that makes sense now. Hm. Well, the TN tri colors have 1 buck: a red. So, that means that the offspring that I will buy are "eje"... meaning, I want to stick with wideband agouti's, unless I do this: breed "eje" to a tort, then breed the offspring "Aa...eje" (test breed to red to confirm "eje") to another offspring "Aa...eje"... but that's a lot of extra litters, and I'd need a tort (or a self... which would be even more complicated)
Since that's too much effort in my opinion, I think that getting a really good red is the best way to go.

Fawns are not an acceptable Standard Rex color, so you will have a hard time finding those as well. Reds are nearly as hard, because Tort is not acceptable, and Red has a way of turning things into Tort. I would swear I got one last summer, an Agouti marked kit with no black tipping on his coat, lighter compared to a castor, if it was a doe I would have kept it, and now I wish I had. Instead I kept his Castor sister.

I wanted some Tri at one point, and I have ej on my peds, but because I refuse to raise one more variety that I can't interbreed with the main herd (the chins/cals and seals must keep to themselves) I decided it would be the one color I could never have.

Tonya S. has tri rex, but she's in Pa somewhere, I only see her once a year. I will have to ask the Rex group on FB, I know I've seen pictures of the tris.

I keep hearing about a PA tri breeder. But, I'm not going to be able to visit PA...
Thanks Sky for your help on FB! I don't have a fb so that would help a lot.
I've found 2 red Rex breeders, but one hasn't replied and the other won't have any available in August. :(<br /><br />__________ Mon Jul 15, 2013 11:19 am __________<br /><br />AH! I found a cragislist add for tri color rex babies in WI, but it was posted a month ish ago but the only way for me to contact them is through the cragislist email... I really really really hope they check it!!!!

Double R Rabbitry near Toledo has a Charlie Red. he's got some of the best Rex this side, and recently he had a litter with two Red does, I think he's keeping the does, but the buck is up for sale.

Thank you so much! I've sent him an email. Hopefully it will work out.<br /><br />__________ Tue Jul 16, 2013 9:51 am __________<br /><br />Unfortunately that person is unable to hold him until August due to space restraints... anyone else know of a really good red Rex breeder?
