These are posed to the best of my one handed ability. Pictures are number with the first pict of the same bunny numbered. Assume it's the same bunny until you see a new number.

If you would, make a list of keepers and a list of culls. you can say why would would keep or cull if you like. It would help me and probably others.

__________ Wed Jun 20, 2012 9:31 pm __________

No takers? I feel like persona non grata. It's ok to say cull them all.

I very much like the shape of rabbit #1 but the white hair in his black markings concerns me
I also like #2 the otter doe and #4 the broken otter doe
I'd like to see another pic of #3 i dont know if the over exposure is messing with my brain or what but i think he has potential, #8 might be a wait n see but the other just dont seem to peek well or in the right place

hope that helps i dont think you need to cull them all !!!!

Hi
These are standard Rex? Do the same type rules apply to them as minis?
I mean is their standard similar tO mini Rex only larger? Do you look for the same things?
Thanks!

Yes these are my standards. No rexes and minis do not look the same bodywise. Minis are more compact and should be posed to look like a ball, while rexes are laid out more like the commercial breeds--Cals, NZ. Ear length does not matter in a standard rex.

check out the depth and compactness (not a word?) of these ones

I wish I knew more about rex! The SoP is definitely on my "need" list (along with a tattoo kit and like 6 more cages) I would love it if we could make a habit of having threads like this.

I like number 3 from the top as well. When they hop around are they cow-hocked? I'm noticing a lot of big ol feet sticking out. I also like #8

I've noticed a few that seem to lean to on side or another, I think they are crooked. But for the most part, it's because I was trying to keep them still with one hand and take the pict with another. It could also be that they need to grow into their feet, just like puppies.

__________ Wed Jun 20, 2012 11:26 pm __________

People seem to like the bucks.

Skysthelimit,
It'sw just my opinion but:
1 B/Black looks nice though a bit weak
in the shoulder, they may develop later
Otter Doe Fair type but poor fur quality.
3 Black Buck Appears blue in the picture, low rise. I would cull.
B/Black otter good type but once again Low shoulder.
5B/Otter Low shoulder, late rise, rise should start just behind the ears.
6 B/castor Doe Rise is a bit low, long in type. I'd cull.
7 B/castor Doe better in type than 6 I'd hang
onto her and reassess later.
8 B/Black a bit low in the rise but may develop later.
9 Castor Buck Fair type but again, narrow shoulder.
Shoulders may improve given time.
Ottersatin. :eek:ldtimer:

I don't show, so I don't know a thing about type, but #3 looks as though she has some Astrex fur. I would love to get a doe like that!

thanks.

I am culling tonight. I am not keeping any of the bucks. I have three bucks, way more than I need, so if the kits are not better or as good as those three, they get culled. From the last six months, in this line, I have not seen an improvement of shoulder. If they don't have it it never comes.
For the otter, I have seen fur improvement, so those with poor fur usually fur out to be normal rex coat.

keeping 1, 2, 4, 7

culling the rest

Skimmed the pictures but really can't take a look at the moment.I generally don't start looking at my litters until 8 weeks ,but I cull for obvious things I do not want. I hold on to them for 10-12 weeks now to further evaluate (Kicking myself over a few sales I've done for culling too early). Then I get a breeder or two near me with experience (since I have so little) in my breed to look them over. I think culling the males is a good idea. Especially since you know what to expect from your line. They need to be exceptional to keep.

LOL! See, what to you is poor fur (presumably because Astrex doesn't do well on the show table--DQ?) would be highly desirable to me! :D

You and me both! I just love to daydream over long wavy satin angora astrex...*sigh*

The sad part is, there are only 10 Rex breeders in the Ohio club, two don't actually live in Ohio and one suddenly stopped breeding last year. The closest person is too far away.

Since Rex are still considered a meat breed, they are looked at around 6 weeks. At 8-12 weeks, and sometimes 16, I'm culling for meat. No one who isn't clearly exceptional will make it past 14 weeks. I culled six today.

Actually, this would even be poor Astrex quality, no waves just guard hairs like a NZ. I have never seen an Astrex in person, I am told that most show breeders who get that in their lines cull before the kits are weaned. No slight intended to the Astrex, I find the coat very fascinating, and there was a time I thought it might be. Unfortunately, or fortunately, the coat grew in normal.

This line does have a history of prominent guard hairs.

__________ Mon Jun 25, 2012 1:30 pm __________

I'm thinking to cull this entire litter. 1 is a buck, and I don't need anymore bucks. The otter, 2, is very small, like a runt (but she didn't start out that way) not what I want in a doe. 4 is ok, 7 is definitely pinched in the rear.

I hope this doe produces better with the next litter.

If those were mine, I would have kacked them all, and not made that particular breeding again. BTDT

Pretty much that is what is going to happen. I do not like any of them, and I am a bit disappointed. My breeder got two very nice kits from this combination last time, before I bought this doe, so I was hoping to get a nice otter. That didn't happen. The good thing is I don't own that buck, so I can't repeat the breeding :)

__________ Fri Jul 06, 2012 9:51 pm __________

It's amazing how in the few months since I have decided to raise show rabbits (as opposed to my original goal of meat rabbits) how my understanding has changed to the point where I am willing to cull whole litters because I can see their weaknesses. There are a lot of narrow shoulders, narrow bodies, low shoulders and pinched hips. I took me a while and a few litters to realize that they will not get any better over time, no one in this line grows out of anything. What I see at 3 weeks, at 8 weeks at 12 weeks is what I am going to see at 6 mos.
