We add apple cider vinegar to our chickens water, which keeps them healthy (good for humans as well) Is that something you can do for rabbits?

Yes. If you use water bottles or valves don't put the live (with mother) type in them because they will clog.

I use about a tsp per quart. In addition to helping their digestion, it also cuts down on the smell of their pee.

I would love to use it, but I have no idea how to do it in an auto system, and the idea is not appealing enough to me to provide crocks.

Why not put it in your bucket? Half a cup for a 5-gallon bucket should be about right. Figure how long it takes your rabbits to go through 5 gallons of water (I would estimate about a quart per rabbit per day), and that will tell you how often to add the vinegar.

I add a little to the water, has REALLY reduced smells and seems to make more robust buns. :) I always get a little panicky though, my roommate likes to really pour it in there when she waters the rabbits, and too much can be, well...TOO MUCH! :(

i haven't seen any change in mine, I've been doing it since Feb., I've tried different amounts, but I keep doing it just in case it might work.

Does it have to be apple cider vinegar? Or will regular vinegar work?

I've read somewhere that white vinegar (whether it's food-grade or for cleaning purposes) can be toxic to rabbits. I'm unsure of the credibility of the site that I read it on, but no one else has provided me with a clear "Yes, it's toxic" or "No, it's fine" answer. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

After reading all of the benefits, I [my mother, rather] purchased some "Cider Vinegar" with a picture of apple on the bottle. It ended up being diluted white vinegar with apple flavoring. :slap:

In my honest opinion, it's best to purchase Apple Cider Vinegar with mother (brown tendrils) in it. But I know some members on the forum claim that mother isn't necessary, and receive the same results with the filtered kind... So, I suppose it's up to you.

I put white vinegar on my fries, its not toxic it is exactly the same as all other vinegars... double distilled ethanol (pure alcohol) that's been de-alcoholized. Vinegar that is white is made from grapes without skins. Apple cider is made from apples and so on, the concept is the same. They are all 5% acetic acid by volume. Some are filtered and some are not.

You will want to read the label. If it says apple cider flavoured, it is not real apple cider vinegar. If it say apple cider vinegar, then it should be made from apples. Only the natural, unfiltered ones will have the "mother".

White vinegar is not toxic but it is useless. It's simply acetic acid suspended in water. Usually a 5% solution in stores. It does nothing except make your water more acidic and has no useful nutrients in it. Apple cider vinegar still has all the nutrients from fermenting an apple in to vinegar.

The ACV I bought recently is real apple cider, although it's filtered, so no mother.
