I was under the impression that rabbits didn't require much vet care and vaccines. Is this true? Are there any vaccines/ regular vet health care that rabbits need?
There is the Pasteurella some people are trying, but there are no required vaccines.
They don't need yearly physicals, heck other pets also don't need that. The whole point about that is that you, as the owner who see them everyday, may miss a limp/bump/etc.
All a rabbit needs is a draft free, clean, dry cage, nails trimmed, good food and clean water. After that, the rest should be fine.
This is what I thought was the case, however when people were talking about the pasteurella vaccine I thought maybe I had my facts wrong. Thanks for clearing this up for me!
The pasteurella vaccine is a hot topic right now, because it is very, very new.
As far as vet care goes, most vets don't know much about treating rabbits. If you feel you need a vet, make sure to find one with plenty of rabbit experience. Many of us on here have never employed a vet in our rabbit care, though.
Websites from the UK, Europe and Australia add to the confusion since their pet rabbits do need vaccination from diseases such as Myxomatosis and Viral Haemorrhagic disease which thankfully we don't have in North America.
