I tried to use online tree ID sites but I'm having issues. One site said dogwood and one site said buckeye

I have not seen the fruit or flowers.

__________ Thu Sep 11, 2014 12:20 pm __________

The tree ID sites now agree on catalpa. Sadly that means it is poisonous and useless.

It looks like it has powdery mildew, so probably wouldn't be safe to feed anyway.

I vote Lilac as well. Did it bloom lavender/purple and smell divine?
Perhaps you could post a pic of the entire plant.

I see no sign of flower or seed pod. Maybe there was some blooms in that area when we were looking at the house but it could be another tree/bush over there that had flowers.

While we're at it lets ID the thing next to it

It has clusters of somewhat shiny leaves.

It's really hard to identify shrubs and trees from pictures, unless there are obvious identifying characteristics. Akane, can you take samples to your Extension Agent for identification? That might be your best bet. When photographing leaves as in the first picture, adding a ruler or something similar for scale is very helpful. Catalpa and lilac both have heart shaped leaves, but Catalpas have huge leaves while those of lilac are quite a bit smaller.

Zass is right on the money regarding scale in pics.

The shiny leaf shrub is likely a rhododendron. Look it up and see if you have a match.

Dredge this back up now that I have time for it.

I have no measuring device but across my palm or fingers it is about 3" so here is the main tree in question

The base looks like this

It appears to have shoots but they have no leaves. Some do have buds. I don't know why they would at this time of year. If you can tell me 100% this is a lilac it will save me $50 in chinchilla wood chews.

The other tree/bush looks like it is a rhododendron.

Is this a honeysuckle? The leaves are about 2".

Another mystery thing but the purple probably makes it easier to ID

Lilac, rhododendron, honeysuckle, and I thought a Japanese maple variety, but the leaves are...off. Not sure on the last one.

Elm? Leaves are 2-3". slightly mangled by a helpful husky puppy

honeysuckle? Tiny leaves and fruit. 1 fruit per stem.
