Ok, so I sold a Cal/NZW cross to a lady. She bred her to a NZR buck. The litter produced these kits:

Some of them look tort to me...where does that come from genetically? The Cal side or the NZ side?

A tort is a self red (or fawn or cream or orange) that's where she got them.

Your Cali x NZW must be (or carry) self black and a non extension and the NZR buck has two non extension, agouti and must carry a recessive self

Mix them togeather and you produced fawns, blacks, Cali or REW and torts.

Thanks, Dood! That is what I figured but did not exactly know how to explain it!
