Torn skin

Dear Amigos -

We've had a break in the heat and I decided to try my hand at breeding one of my does to my buck. I've bred her a few times over the past 24 hours and today when I was attempting to breed her one last time, I found that her skin on her back was torn.

There was a patch of skin about the diameter of a golfball just gone. It's the first I've noticed it. It wasn't just hair missing, it looked like I could see the inner / dermis layer of the skin. It was kinda gross.

What should I do? I didn't leave my doe very long with the buck (on any of the attempts) and I didn't see any fighting. Is it possible that his claws did this when he was ... breeding her?

I've heard of the buck injuring the doe while breeding... I haven't bred so someone else might be able to answer better!
I'm not sure how to treat the wound, especially because it's on her back. Would you be able to put a bandage on, wrapping around the stomach...?

I don't know that I could wrap anything around her. <imagine with me here> If the rabbit were sitting on the table looking away from you - the tear would be right on the rump section - perhaps a few inches off the table. If I wrapped anything around her - it would probably get fouled up with pee on the under-side.

Well....if it's been more then 24 hours since you've found the wound, the best thing to do would just be to put an anti-biotic ointment on it and let it heal up on it's own. If it's been less then 24 hours then clean the area well and stick it together with super glue....no seriously....super glue = surgical glue...there's in really no difference.

Just make sure it's the kind without a pain reliever in it!

I prefer bacitracin myself.

I would just put Bluekote on it daily after cleaning it and leave her be. Maybe spray around her cage with fly spray so they don't find her and she gets flystrike.

That sounds like she was bitten. That is a typical spot that rabbits will bite on each other. I would clean it well, and put some ointment or blukote on it. That is one reason why it is not suggested to leave a buck and doe together unsupervised. They can hurt, seriously injure or even kill one another. I put mine together and watch while they do their business. I let the buck have 4 "fall offs" then I take the doe out. It takes no more than 5-10 min at the most. There is really no need for multiple breeding times over 24hrs....

This is great advice. I will apparently have to watch a bit closer - though I will admit, the "together time" was very limited and I watched for fighting, but I clearly must have missed some sort of biting by my buck. I appreciate the heads up. I'll watch out a bit closer for this in the future.
