I'm considering keep this boy as a backup buck. He would be replacing my mutt silver tipped steel buck. This boy is also a mutt but a 1/2 rex mutt. The silver tipped steel buck is rather bony so I'm sure he'd be an improvement in that area.

I'm still learning and trying to judge things. I kept back 4 does from my rex bucks first litters. As they have grown I've decided I only like one of them enough to keep

How old is he? He looks pretty promising... I don't see a lot of hollowness between the loin and hip, which is a problem in Rex. His shoulders are also pretty wide and balance well with his hindquarters.

LOVE his coloring- the black lacing on his ears is stunning!!!

:yeahthat:

I am learning, a little at a time. What I can tell, he looks good, but that's not saying much

Love the coloring. I just got two young Chins that look similar (not the best markings for that breed, but I have a doe that has them so I am hoping to start improving on them). I definitely am drawn to it...

Thank you very much for the feedback.

I love his coloring as well. I was so disappointed when he turned out to be a buck rather than a doe. He's 12 weeks old. His dam is around 6lbs so not huge but the buck he would be replacing is smallish as well so size isn't a huge issue. I have a magpie buck in this same litter that is actually a bit bigger but the magpie buck has been keeping bit of a wet nose :x

He would be a backup buck like I said so if he didn't turn out I'd get a really nice pelt out of him.

Thank you for your feedback as well heritage. We were posting at the same time.

I think he looks good for his age!
I'm totally learning, but appreciate the chance to look and hear feedback.

MSD ~ tell me about the shoulders? I thought they looked a little narrow but not bad for a young guy... can you explain what you see to help me out?
I see the hollowness in the loin (I have been working on that aspect ;) ) but it isn't bad compared to a lot of purebred rex I have been looking at.

That was my thought as well. He tapers nicely from front to back- some rabbits are really narrow up front, so they have almost a pear shape from the top.

He is just slightly hollow. I expect he will fill in nicely as he matures. Many Rex lack fullness there- so whatever he is crossed with must have a nice round hindquarter.

Try not to get hung up on how your meat mutts look as adults - fast growth and good muscle tone at 10 weeks (or whatever age you choose to butcher) is the important stage

Most of my adult breeders hover around 8 pounds and are somewhat gangly looking as I don't let my does get too chunky but their offspring are lovely examples of meat rabbits when they're between 10 and 14 weeks old

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I'm actually surprised it's been generally good. I liked him but was afraid I was just in love with his color.

I'm just kinda working with what I have in that I'm trying to improve without buying more rabbits. I have just happened to get really lucky in the color department. His dam is out of Mitka my little 5lb doe and by my silver tipped steel buck. She was the biggest out of her litter when I butchered and weighs about 6lbs now.
