Just wanted to share a totally non-important "taste" of my life :)

Yesterday after a day of shoveling out, watching movies, enjoying a nap, my mind was obviously not functioning. At 4:50pm I asked Michael "What would you like for supper?" thinking of the leftover venison chili, the 2 pork steaks, an easy pizza. In the back of my befuddled mind I even hoped for a response that included the word "restaurant". Alas, 'twas not to be. :(

"You know what I've REALLY had a taste for lately? Corned beef! With the cabbage and potatoes. Yeah. That would be great!" said Micheal, who then went back to surfing the net.

SIGH :x

I really try to honor his requests when I can. Micheal doesn't ask for much, and is really easy going...particularly with food. (His mother was not exactly a great cook. A lot of fish sticks and strange sounding casseroles. She doesn't like to mess around with spices and stuff. Salt and pepper is enough, but pepper is expensive, and salt is bad for you so.... ) Michael will eat just about anything and never complain. But lordy...Corned Beef in an hour without having a beef, or cabbage, in the house? hmmmm.....

Off to the store I went. Went to the deli and bought 1/2# sliced corned beef.($3.47) Then a can of bavarian style saur kraut ($.69). A bag of Tater Tots (and a couple other things that I wanted for the pantry anyway).

SO! An hour later we had his Corned beef and Cabbage! .... Just not in the form he was thinking about :D Reuben sandwiches! on homemade pumpernickel that I had in the freezer already, with thousand island dressing from the pantry, and the good yummy swiss cheese from the dairy/cheese maker in Monroe. (gooooood cheese) :p

Dinner was a hit, one dish to clean, and no leftovers to worry about putting away! YAY!

On a side note, we haven't had Tater Tots in years. I'd forgotten how good they can be!

Yummy!!! That sounds good. I have to go to town today...and I already have the saurkraut.

Good for you, Ann.

I'm more careful when I ask Brian what he'd like for supper. Along the lines of: "We can have chicken or pork chops. I can curry the chicken or we can have it with veggies and baked potatoes. What would you like?" I'd want more than an hour's notice for a special request. :)

Ahh, a Ruben sandwich... I haven't had one in a while....J and I really love them.

I always hated asking my ex what he would like- he never committed to anything, then always griped about 'why didn't I make the other?"Gosh anice warm Rueben would be sooo good right now.... bUt I have a Tex mex thing in the fridge, nd LOTS of lasagna....

lol Maggie, you know thats what they suggest when giving toddlers choices, right? lol!

Man, Ann, every post you make about food makes me realize I am hungry (even when I just ate) You should make a cook book! I would buy it!

You're right, Shara! :D Works well for toddlers of all ages though.

It's more a case of giving a bit of room for preference, while keeping the prep reasonable. I'm tired by supper time... except on special occasions, I don't want to be standing in the kitchen for ages. And after all, if they have the chicken tonight, they're going to get the pork chops the next night anyway... so what's the difference?

Tater Tots always give me the hiccups----

You'd think I'd have learned over the last 12 years not to ask him, wouldn't you? He's always fine with whatever I make tho, or if I say "nukables in the freezer". Took me years to understand that he really doesn't care. He doesn't eat for comfort food, or because he really craves the taste of something. It's just food.

Now..that's not to say he doesn't have favorites, or a developed sense of "good vs excellent". There are 4 levels of food. "it's fine". "that's good". "you could make that again" and the dreaded "it was okay". I've never heard him say "ewww" or "man that was bad", even when he tried a spoonful of the dog treats I was making (by accident...I had some "mush" on the stove that was being prepared to turn into doggie bisquits).

hmm. I have tator tots left over and I'm getting hungry. Might be time to light the fire on the stove and fry me up some TATER TOTS! mmMMMM!

Anything with sourkraut is good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My nephew calls it "SOURCRAPP"

I had home canned kraut, fresh middlen meat, mac & matters, and a pan of cornbread a few nights ago. YUMYUM
