Yes, the fairy has been overly zealous at my rabbitry in the past half year. Her magic resulted in a litter of 13 born on the ground last October. If you know what the weather is like up here you will be shivering in sympathy.

On Thursday I tried a breeding with my Sallander doe and my Harlequin buck. Well! I had never seen such a reaction to putting two rabbits together. It was like the cartoon of the Tasmanian Devil. Fur was flying! What the heck?

I hauled her out and had a look at him. Only he wasn't a him! He was a she! I haven't had this much trouble with sexing rabbits in years. Sigh.

Fortunately I had another male to use and the two are happily copulating as we speak.

You would think good news...but I had a look at the rest and out of 12 rabbits only 2 are boys. At least I have those two! I am working on a meat project and don't want to be too limited at this point!

Only I would complain about too many girls, but last year was a girl year. 6 of the 7 sheep born last year were ewe lambs. I kept them all and I think I may be overwhelmed with lambs this year!

I was Dead-Dog, beat-down, tired when I made a 400+ mile trip to buy my
American Chins. I "bought" 6 does and 4 bucks. Brain-Dead....I never
thought to "LOOK." BIG MISTAKE....LMAO. :x :x

I got home late in the day, did chores, put the new buns in their pens, and
hit the recliner for the night. Next day...I had 6 bucks and 4 does.
"Well, I'll be jiggered." I had NO ONE but my tired-self to blame.

BTW: Them little suckers weren't cheap.

grumpy.

YIKES!!! I had no idea it was so common to mis-sex bunnies. Now I don't feel so stupid to have ended up with our litter. :p

Imagine my embarrassment last time this happened. The judge turned the Jr. Doe over and said, "Uh...it's a buck!" That was my first year raising and showing rabbits.

HAhah!!! Yeah, I felt kind of dumb about missing my buck, because it would have been really easy to tell if I had just checked him LATER. :p The times I did check him, he was still young. After he was, uh.... 'fully developed', it was obvious. :/

Hmmmm never seen anyone have that problem breeding. Of course, it is slightly easier to tell with horses. :nana:

Whipple and I had that happen at a show too, only it wasn't our first or even our third one
We'd sexed this youngster and just never rechecked, we'd even tattooed 'her' with 'her' name. We ended up with a buck named Nala, 'she' didn't stay long after that

A friend of mine showed a "doe" several times, and also exhibited "her" at Convention (where "she" passed as a doe)... and sold her to a Youth exhibitor.

Well, that "doe" turned out to be a buck!

Aside from the embarrassment of selling a rabbit of the wrong sex, my friend would have kept the rabbit for her own program if she had known it was a doe... so it was a double whammy from the Sex Change Fairy. :x

The sex change fairy visited me on my last litter .... and I was happy he did.

Lol, OAF!!! That SCF looks like it was drawn by Berkeley Breathed- the cartoonist who wrote Bloom County...

JenX, that poor lady seated on the bench next to the Sex Change Fairy knows she has been outdone... her pink dress just can't compare.
