Okay, so I've stated it several times on this site, and I'll say it again. I do have a fairly decent grasp of rabbit genetics, but I'm new to this still, and the anomalies still get to me.

I posted a thread in meat rabbits called "mouthful" with my little kits that are a complete mutt mix, but turned out to be some of the cutest darn colors.

Mom is a self black.
Dad is a broken fawn.

I ended up with:

2 broken blacks
1 broken blue
1 broken chocolate
1 broken chocolate tort

Here's the kicker...

The blue has dark chocolate brown eyes
One of the blacks, the chocolate, and the chocolate tort, which should all have brown eyes, have either charcoal grey or grey eyes.

Technically, shouldn't dilutes have grey eyes and full colors have brown eyes? I could maybe understand a shade off normal, or possibly one kit in the litter has off genetics and the eye color didn't work out perfectly, but nearly the whole litter?!

I know I live close to a company that deals with nuclear by-products, but I didn't think I lived that close!

Whats going on here!?

It is highly unlike the buck is a fawn as this is an agouti based colour and 50% of the kits should be agouti of some sort. It is also likely that he is a Charlie with two broken genes since all the kits are broken.

This makes me wonder about the kit colours, do you have pictures of them? I just visited your 'Mouthful' post and it is very odd that you got all selfs. Do you have a picture if the fawn buck?

Technically, shouldn't dilutes have grey eyes and full colors have brown eyes?
not always. Many breeders try and get the darkest eyes possible regardless of modifiers since most SOP prefer a dark eye, since your rabbits are Heinz 57's it is unlikely anyone has been breeding for eye colour and it is just a luck you got a mixed bag.

PS my chin kits (dark shaded) often have grey eyes as kits but they usually darken to brown by 4 months.

The buck is for sure a fawn, he has both the white inner ears and eye circles. Not to mention that his latest litter with my lilac tort doe turned out with one fawn, two creams, one false charlie cream and one false charlie fawn, and one broken and two solid ermines that have the tort coloring. Pics of the kits in the thread below. Can't be a charlie as some of the kits are solids in this litter, and it's happened in other litters too.

I'll get a pic up soon as I find one that fits the size requirements.

It's not that any of what happened was impossible, its just that all of it occurring in the same litter is HIGHLY improbable!

Maybe I should buy a lottery ticket! :p

__________ Thu Nov 07, 2013 8:24 pm __________

My chins have blue, blue gray, gray, brown and some hazel type eyes, and all are acceptable. Got any chin in there some where?

Oh, and as far as the kits that are listed and don't show up in the pics in the other thread were either still born (torted ermine) or I had to cull due to birth defects (fawn).

And I do have chin in the background, the sire's Grandpa is a chin. But these are all selfs... Not sure if that matters!

No it does not. Self chin happens. To me, alot. I find it very frustrating,, because they are useless in my breeding program. I've had self chins with all of the same colors of the chin eyes, which is how I knew they were self chins and not self rabbits.

Wow!

For this particular pair of rabbits, having a self only has a 25% chance and to get 5 is crazy! And on top of that they are all broken from a broken and not a Charlie buck

I think you should buy a lotto ticket.

Self chins (aa __ cchd_ __ E_ ) can have greyish blue eyes but any fawn or tort kits would be noticeably different and sable (or chocolate, blue, lilac) points or Sallanders.

Hmm...

I know that my other buck (the one who didn't father this litter) is a self blue chin, but didn't consider it for explaining the eye color in this litter. Darn you sky, now I want to keep a few of the kits back to see what I get!

I want to take sage home.. He is so handsome.

Thank you!

He was my first angora a two years ago when I started. He's my baby. He's spoiled rotten and an absolute love, and my only rabbit that can get away with everything and I'd do anything for.

I bred him to my lilac tort doe, and she's one of my sweetest rabbits too. She actually stands up on the grooming table and puts her front feet up on your shoulder and asks for hugs. Their temperaments together made for some awesome kits. As soon as I open the door all of the little boogers are hanging out of it wanting pets. I'm just hoping they got the balance of wool I was looking for, as Sage is very soft and dense and has somewhat shorter wool and Hazel (mom) is not very dense and a bit coarse, but has some prime fiber that is pushing 8 inches.

Though I really should save the cage for grow outs, I'm keeping a doe kit out of this litter. She's the cleanest cream I've ever seen, no smut!

You know, if you'll be down in the CO area, there are two little broken fawn/cream does still looking for homes!

Please do. chin genetics are so interesting, anything on the C- fascinates me, because there is not a clear dominance, all kinds of crazy pops up. Makes for beautiful litters.
