I have been breeding meat rabbits for a while, and I am now breeding Lionheads. I am registered with ARBA and have my rabbitry name.."Rusty Sun Rabbitry". Here's my question. When I tattoo my Lionheads, do I put my reg. # in the ear, or my rabbitry. For instance would I put RR1 for Rusty Sun Rabbitry? and then move up to the next number with each kit? Advice would be really appreciated. Also I have never tattooed before. I just ordered a tattooing pen. :bunnyhop:

Everyone has their own method, but I like to be able to know by looking in the ear who the rabbit is and when it was born, where it fell size wise at weaning/tattooing, and I have recently started adding my rabbitry initials to the end.

For example, LP192VG is out of 'Lectric Blue and Poppy, heaviest kit of the litter 1, born in the 9th month of 2012 at Victory Garden Rabbits.

I use X for November and Z for December.

You are able to fit all that in an ear! :D

I have not decided how to tattoo mine yet either, so I am interested in what others do as well. :)

About the only thing I know is the ARBA registration number goes in the right ear, it's done at a show by a registrar. Your ID goes in the left ear.

I think she may have been referring to her rabbitry registration and not the rabbit registration. At any rate. Mine system which really isn't one is LF (for Last Fling Tans) and a number. I just tattooed six today LF15 thru LF20. Before that I had been using Buck initial, Doe initial and number. Then I ran into two bucks with the same initial. I could have added a number to the letter, but thought what the heck and LFxx was born. If I want the details, I'll look at pedigree or data I keep in EVANS software I use. My juniors ears aren't long enough to write all that MSD does  Not to mention, the rabbits and I would probably be at each other by the time I got to the end. :p

You just need to write small! This is a picture of my Jersey Wooly buck Prodige's ear- he wasn't tattooed when I got him, but this was his tattoo # on his pedigree:

That's how I started out, because my handwriting is pretty bad. I got the hang of it real quick though, and I'm so glad I bought the pen.
