I believe because it is cheaper for them to buy. I have fed it to my meat mutts in the past and they did just fine. I would watch close how much you feed because I believe it is higher in fat.
Not everyone is avoiding corn, though some are. That is a choice each person has to make for themselves as they are choosing feed for their rabbits.

__________ Sat Dec 22, 2012 10:54 am __________

I believe the big corn scare started when a big breeder lost most of their herd to some kind ofcorn mold spore found in the processed pellets. I can not remember the name of the mold off hand. Only that it started with an M. I will try and find it when im on my computer, instead of this darn phone.

Mycotoxin, I believe.

I am feeding a sweet feed right now. I'm seeing how it goes. My buns have been on it for 2 months now, and it seems to be going pretty well. It's a 14% quarter horse feed, and as long as I get it with light molasses, it hardly has any molasses.

It's oats (crimped and whole), corn, alfalfa pellets, chops, Manna Pro spur pellets, trace minerals, salt, and molasses. And maybe one or two other things I'm forgetting.

I'm supplementing with extra alfalfa pellets to bring the protein up some, and BOSS.

I use seeds like BOSS, Nyjer and flax to bring up the protein in feed because I am avoiding much Alfalfa in their diet.

how much does it cost you .

My daughter when she was in 3rd grade did a science experament called "Who's Hopping the Heaviest". In it she had two rabbits from the same litter. One she gave sweet feed and all it could eat alfalfa hay. The other was given rabbit pellets. She tracked the weight of the rabbits over 2 months. In the end Both rabbits gained about the same amount and both rabbits looked good. We were told by many that feeding alfalfa would ruin the cob feed rabbits fur and it did not. She placed first On her project and did real good.

That is a rally cool project.

The corn problem started way before then. For me it started 6 plus years ago when dogs started dying from bad feed, mold in the corn. I stopped buying dog foods with corn, though I always fed corn on the cob to my pet bunnies. After a while, I stopped feeding dog food, and so when I got the rabbits, I naturally avoided corn.

The TSC sweet feed also has animal by products, depending on which brand you buy. The brands that are cheaper than a bag of pellets tend to have the animal by products. There is no brand here that does not have animal byproducts that is cheaper than a bag of TSC brand or MannaPro pellets.

really.... tHANKS SKY i didnt know that. I think i will pass on this idea. I know here there is some pellets that has tallow in the list. I know which those are so i avoid buy those.

Yeah I just read it on the label today, while I was picking up BOSS at TSC, and trying to decide what food to buy.

It costs me $10.50 for 50 lbs of 14%. 17% alfalfa pellets are $13.50 for 50 lbs. BOSS is $10 for 10 lbs (and it doesn't get any better as you go up).

That is freaky. The sweet feed I use is locally produced, and has no animal by products.

What an excellently-executed project! Interesting results, too. :)

I see. This is the difference in quite few places. Ohio has farmland somewhere, and few Amish communities near me, but I can't find anything locally produced in my area, not enough to get better selection and prices. Everything basically comes from big chain stores like TSC. They either sell MannaPro, Purina or their own brand for every animal feed they have. I can't even get locally produced Buckeye Feeds at TSC. If I lived several hours south I probably could find sweet feed locally w/o animal by products.

ok, i just checked into this today. here there is no animal by-product in it. but the cost is high. I will not be saving any money by buying that. Is it almost 20.00 for a 25kg bag.

Ugh. Yeah.

SKY-- SEnd me what you want in a sweet feed-- Austinburg Mill will custom blend feed. If what you are looking for matches what I am okay with, we could possibly get together for a combined order... I can also send you the ingredient list for this senior horse feed I use..

Wow... I would have thought that you lived in the ideal place to mix your own feed, or to be able to buy locally-produced feed on every street corner.

I live in Cleveland, 15 minutes from downtown. I am in the city proper, basically Walmart, Home Depot and Lowes. And what you can't get there you can't get. Tractor Supply is the nearest feed store, 25 miles away, what they call feed stores around here are really glorified pet shops. Barberton and Medina are the nearest farming communities, 45 miles away, but they aren't real farms, people keep some horses and maybe a few chickens. When you drive through it looks like the suburbs not rural communities.
Amish country is more than an hour away by highway, about 60 plus miles.
There is very little local farmland in Cuyahoga County, those are historical museum farms, real working farms are in counties south and west of me.

__________ Mon Dec 24, 2012 9:56 am __________

I would have no idea. What I don't want is corn, anything else is ok.
