As I type this, my Grand Champion White Satin doe "Trish Stratus" is delivering a litter of babies. One of the 4 she's had so far didn't make it, but the others appear to be doing well.

And of course, my Grand Champion White Satin buck "Big Show" is their dad. Ought to make for a solid litter, as both mom and dad have been fantastic show rabbits. Needless to say, I'm stoked about this one. :pinkbunny:

Yeah, Maggie. I don't know what's up with my white does. Maryse had her litter 5 days late. TS was due on the 15th, and she's having them 3 days late. Must be something in the water.

She hasn't downloaded any more since my last posting, but I should have a clear picture of how many total when I come home on my lunch break.

Well, it looks like 4 born with 3 surviving. Don't know if the weather had any effect on it, but I like small litters, so this one is right up my alley.

And of course, Stratus is still ornery as a crosseyed coon.

That'd be pretty ornery, right there!

She grunts and growls at me everytime I come near her cage.

When she was a show rabbit, she bit me a few times on the way to and from the show table.

She even snapped at Tex Thomas up in Carthage, Missouri in May.

The gal is the embodiment of ornery, and anyone who is around her sees it immediately.

While she acts like she hates being handled, trust me when I tell you that she enjoys attention.

But honestly, I'll take her any day, because she's showing to be one heck of a mom. There may only be 3 rabbits in the box, but I'm expecting big things out of this litter. The genetics are there.

__________ Mon Jul 18, 2011 8:17 pm __________

Thanks, Lauren!!

Well, only 2 of the babies made it thru the first 2 days, but the remaining 2 seem to be doing fine. I had my doubts about whether or not Stratus was taking care of the litter, but got my answer early this morning when I went in to check on her and she was in the box feeding them. As I expected, she's a very protective and territorial mom.

And as ya'll can tell from the pic, both have that little "sheen line" around the rump.

Yeah, Maggie, I was pretty disappointed in losing the first two. The first one I lost was dead almost from the get-go, and I suspect that it was stepped on shortly after birth. The second one I found dead yesterday when I got home from work, and that got me to wondering if Stratus was even taking care of them. Then along came the insomnia theatre in the wee hours of the morning. I went in to check on Mom to see what was going on, and she was in there feeding them and was never phased by me being there, which is somewhat unusual for Stratus.

As you can tell, Stratus didn't pull alot of hair. I tried to use a little of Maryse's hair from the box she used (yes, I kept it around for just such a situation) and Stratus apparently didn't like the idea because it was gone the next time I came in after that. It may have been a seasonal thing, though, so I'm guessing she'll do better this fall.

That sheen is almost always unmistakable, isn't it? It is usually most notable when the litter is 1-2 weeks old and their surface/base coats begin to come on. When the camera flash hits them at that point, you'll normally get a good glare coming off them. Their bodies seem to have good depth, but they are very young and much of that doesn't reveal itself until they become juniors. It's going to be interesting to see how these two turn out.

__________ Thu Jul 21, 2011 5:44 am __________

Well, it's back to the drawing boards. The remaining two babies died last night. :(

Sorry to hear that, but is this her first litter? I had almost the exact same experience with one of my favorite does and have my fingers crossed for more success in the Fall.

Lauren

First litter, and the heat likely played a role in the whole thing.

I'm terribly disappointed in how it played out, but I'm going to wait until this nasty heat begins to subside before giving it another try.
