Hello, I am new to this forum.
I am new to raising rabbits and hope someone here can help me figure out what caused this problem so I can try avoid this from happening again.
I have a doe that I bought a while back at a auction, I didn't know she was bred. So this morning I saw that she had started pulling fur. I put a nesting box in her cage and she pulled a lot of fur and made a nice nest on the hay I had provided her. About two hrs. later she started having babies on the wire not in the nesting box. I was close by while she was having them and as she had each one they did not move or make a sound. She did not try to clean them up or anything so I took each one out and wrapped them in a towel. She had seven babies but they all seemed lifeless. They all were nice sized for new born babies and I kept them wrapped up in the towel for about a hour but by then they were getting cold. I think they were born dead. The temperature was about 80 degrees when they were born, but it has been getting into the mid 90's here in the afternoons.
Could it be heat related? Could it be from stress this morning by getting the nesting box in late. I did notice that there was not much after birth on them when they were born so they did not suffocate from the after birth. She is supposed to be 3 yrs. old so I assume she has had other litters but that is all I know about her. This is the second litter that I have had. The first doe had them on the wire and it was fairly chilly then but I only lost one out of seven. The rest are about 4 weeks old and doing fine.
It is pretty tough to lose the whole litter. I just hope I can figure out what happened.
Any help would be appreciated. Hoping to find an answer.
Thanks, Tommy

Hi Beekeeper,

welcome to RT.

I doubt putting the nest in late had anything to do with it, but other than that I have no idea why this happened, and I am sorry for your loss. My thoughts were chilled kits or preemie kits but your post says otherwise. Hopefully someone will have some experience to help you.

Hi,

Did you say what breed this doe is? I didn't notice. This is fairly common with smaller breeds. I have two hollands that have had either two whole dead litters, or only one survive. The last holland I pulled out six dead kits, one after the other, even after she kindled the first on her own. Finally with try three looming over their heads, one gave me one dead, one live, and the other kindled 5 live kits.

Quite frequently with new does or small breeds one gets stuck holding up the rest and causing them all to come out stillborn. Probably from lack of oxygen.

Thanks for the quick response. I think she is a Dutch. I tried to upload a picture but the file is way to big and I haven't figured out how to post it as a smaller file.
Thanks, Tommy

Tommy,

I use "Paint" to resize my photos to 500 pixels and then post them.

go to edit(I think) and sketch/skew in paint. Put in a percentage based on how big your pic is. It will resize more evenly and quickly than doing pixels.

Hi everybody
I am going to try and upload a picture of my doe.

Thank you and everybody else that responded to my questions. I am thinking about re-breeding her but the only buck I have is large Cali buck. I don't know what she was bred to before but the dead kits were pretty big.
I don't want to give up on her after just one litter but what do you think the chances are of the same thing happening again. I posted a pic of her one post back, I think she is a Dutch.

Thanks, Tommy

I have a Dutch mama that I breed with my Cal and NZW bucks and she does just fine. She is a great mom. Chances are one of the kits got stuck and when that happens, the rest will die in utero. They make great meat rabbits. Where in SW LA are you? I am near Beaumont, TX.

Hi OneAcreFarm

I am just north of Jennings.

Since you are from Beaumont, do you think it is to hot to re-breed her tomorrow. I hate to wait till fall to find out if I bought somebody else s problem. But if it is to hot I don't want to cause more problems. I put one box fan in my rabbitry today and will probably buy another tomorrow. It is sure getting hot early this year.

Thanks, Tommy
