I found the pedigrees for my Rex does, Crystal and Midnight. (The pedigree for my Rex buck, Fudge, is still packed away, and I haven't figured out yet which box it's in, but I do have a few notes on his dam, and I just got off the phone with his dam's breeder, who is graciously sending me a copy of her pedigree!)

This whole color genetics thing makes my head spin and my eyes glaze over, :stars: :surrender2: so I'm hoping that one or more of you experts can give me a clue (in simple language) what I might be able to get out of a breeding. (OAF, are you listening?)

Fudge (Castor buck)
Sire: ??
Dam: Black (Blue x Black Otter)

Crystal (White doe)
Sire: Blue (Black x White) (he and his entire line were bred by Roloffs)
Dam: White (Blue x Blue)
G.Sire: Blue x Broken Chocolate
G.Dam: Black x White
G.Sire: Broken Blue x Blue
G.Dam: Lynx x Blue

Midnight (Black doe)
Sire: Black (Castor x Black)
Dam: Broken Black (Broken Black Otter x Black)
G.Sire: Broken Opal x Black Otter
G.Dam: Black Otter x Broken Black
G.Sire: Broken Black x Black Otter
G.Dam: Black Otter x Broken Black

Well Fudge is an agouti --A, probably carrying black, AaB_C_D_E_. He cannot carry otter because the black would have had to have been an otter to pass on otter.

Crystal is white-- so who really knows, she could be anything. Only real way to tell is to know what she's produced and figure it out from there. But she is probably blue or black.

Midnight contributes aaB_C_D_E-- she can't have any of the castor or otter genes from her parents, because they are dominant over self black and she would have been either castor or otter.

So basically, what you will get , excluding the things we don't know, like whether Fudge carries dilute, chocolate or REW, you will get castors. If Fudge carries black you will get castors and blacks, if REW, castors, blacks and REW, if dilute, you could get castors, opals, blues and blacks.

The does have never been bred, and we lost the doe and unborn litter of Fudge's only breeding, so no past history to go on for any of them.

So no chocolate, even from Crystal (broken chocolate in her line)?

I've written to Fudge's breeder, hoping to get a copy of his sire's pedigree.

I am so glad I bought the Rabbit Register, so it can figure out prospective offspring for me until I know what I'm doing!

Only if Fudge carries it. And only one broken chocolate narrows the probability. The more chocos in the line, the higher the probability.

__________ Wed Aug 01, 2012 7:30 am __________

Rex are not so bad, since there are only 16 that matter to me.

Hollands are another story, still trying to master tort, and forget about the other shaded and pointed colors.

Is Crystal the white rabbit on your avatar? She looks frosted pearl to me A_B_cchl ee
Just making sure hehe :D

Pictures would help a lot

That would be interesting.

and the other side of Fudges pedigree, to see if he has any surprises :) My agoutis are full of surprises.

No, that's my dearly departed original Brazilian buck, Smokey. He was a frosted white.

Pictures would help a lot
I have photos of Crystal and Midnight around here somewhere, but not finding them at the moment. Here's a picture of my buck, Fudge.

Still haven't heard back from Fudge's breeder about his sire's pedigree, but his dam's breeder is sending me a copy of her pedigree.

I just received a copy of the pedigree for Fudge's dam. Here are the colors by generation. Any more ideas? Hopefully I'll be able to get a copy of the pedigree for Fudge's sire soon.

ok, add more info.
But now I am confused. Two blacks cannot make an agouti. If sire was black and dam is black, then in order to have Fudge, someone wasn't black. Otter doesn't make agouti either. Someone had to be an agouti.

It must come from the two "missing" slots on there.

I'm sorry, I read to fast and thought that was the sire's info you posted.

Still nothing has changed much. Fudge probably carries dilute, possibly Cal, you could get castors, opals, blues and blacks. You could get Cal when that REW gene meets the Cal gene.

Fudge's breeder is still looking for the pedigree on his sire (the sire died before I got Fudge), but she thinks his line was all castor.

Trinity, here is the link to the post where I put the pics of Crystal and Midnight....

Such a handsome guy! I *do* have another doe to breed him too... It was such a bummer to lose the other one...she was carrying 8 kits too... :(

Also, I got a handsome Broken Black buck from MSD who will likely be wanting to give Midnight a call when he is old enough... :)

Awesome! Thanks! Just so they're visible in this thread, I've uploaded them to the gallery here.

Here's Crystal:

All castor :( (not a bad thing, it just doesn't help with the equation. If that is so, he could be hiding any gene, since castor is dominant. You could get pretty much everything but otter (because dam was self and so no otter).

You're gonna have to breed that handsome man again for us to find out!
