Are squeaky noises in the nose always a problem or do some rabbits just make squeaky noises even thought there is nothing seriously wrong?
I have a doe I bought to breed and this is the week I'm supposed to breed her. 4 weeks ago I noticed when I pick her up and when she is eating pellets like a piggy-- she makes noises that sound like squeaking in her nose. It sounds like if you took two rubber balls and rubbed them together- like her nasal passages have something in them and its making noise. The sound doesn't seem like its in her lungs when I put my ear against her chest. She doesn't seem sick- i see nothing up her nose- there is no discharge- and its been the same for 4 weeks- and prior to that she seemed perfectly normal.

There have been a couple of reports on here of rabbits that make noises in their noses when they eat, and at no other time.

I'd just watch her... see if that's the only time you hear the noise, see if any other health issues show up... sounds like it could be normal for her. :)

I told the breeder and she said sometimes flat faced rabbits have nasal cavities that aren't perfect - and you get that in flat faced rabbits- so I guess it runs in her lines. I guess I'll just hope its a minor issue and not a health problem.

Interesting. I hadn't heard that before. I'm glad it is not a contagious condition.

I would watch for kits with cleft palate. I suspect that the "imperfect nasal cavities" may be a very mild form of the condition.

If you can, open the doe's mouth and check her palate to make sure there is no cleft. If you can't get her mouth open, try to get a look when she yawns.

That makes sense... I've heard of similar issues with flat-faced cats and dogs.
