I have seen many people who keep their buck cages separate, sometimes in a totally different area. Is there any reason for this other than avoiding accidental breeding?

I keep my bucks on the bottom tier. It is a little cooler there in the summer months which helps with their fertility.

I never thought about that, but then our one buck is very laid back. I keep him next to a doe but the cages are separated by about 6 inches or so. I sort of figured having him in proximity might "encourage" her. We'l have 3 more bucks within the next month, though so we'll have to see how they react. If they do a lot of spraying I'll do a lot of rearranging, LOL

I have found [for me] that if I have a buck next to a doe with a litter she will want to breed early, [starting at 2 weeks or less] and spend a lot of time "making time" through the wire with the buck, and then by the time my breeding schedual comes around at 5 or 6 weeks, she is "out of the mood"and more dificult to breed,- when they are some distance from each other,- the does [and bucks] are ready to breed as soon as she is introduced on my schedual and have not become bored with the situation.

Hmm...My bucks are in the top cages and does in the bottom ones. This is so I can more easily keep an eye on mating success and the thought that the kits with the moms produce more poop.

I have poop trays on the top cages, but the bottom ones are open to the floor. It's easy to shovel it up and I only have to empty the trays once every few days..

I'll have to rethink all of this when we move back out to the country. I haven't had problems with my bucks peeing on the does recently, but I don't want to deal with it either.

It isn't an issue with all bucks. I have never had a problem with does getting peed on by the buck next door, but other members have.

When I had a two-tier rabbitry, I had the same arrangement, TMTex, for the same reason with the mating. My doe cages were not open to the floor, but I wanted to be able to see the mating, and more easily get the doe out quickly.

I love having a single-tier rabbitry, open to the floor.

Also, some bucks will prove their ...um... buckiness by peeing on the does.

What's wrong with that? Isn't that what all men are supposed to do to their wives? :?

I keep my bucks separate from the does just out of OCD. I like my bucks in the same section as bucks and does with does. I've had bucks next to the doe cages before and never had a problem.

My Rex bucks don't seem to spray even when next to a doe. The sidewalls of my cages are touching and I haven't had a doe bred through the wire yet either.

However, I got a former herd sire from my new mentor who breeds Satins- and he pees on everything! It is pretty gross. He is out in my growout area, but still... there is pee on the lid of his J-feeder, so every night guess what I get on my fingers? :razz2:

I just pull up a chair to watch the show. Good point about does with litters though. I have slant boards so it isn't too big of a deal to scrape them. If I had to dump trays I would rethink the arrangement.

It's a wonder you ever got yourself hitched at all Mystang. Let alone with as patient of a lady as your wife must be.

Bless her heart...

My Rex buck doesn't spray, HOWEVER, my SF buck is gross. I have to scrub off his water bottle every time I fill it *gag*
He's very lucky I reeeaaally like him and he's the only SF buck in a fifty mile radius.

I don't have any spraying bucks either. But when I am breeding, it's easy to visually see whats going on with multiple does if all the bucks cages are lined up at the same height. It also means that bucks can go in a smaller area, their cages are smaller than the does by 6-12 inches. Bucks are on the top, easier to lift a doe when there are two in standing on a top tier than crouching under the bottom tier.

I also find, that if there is a buck in the other cage, the breeding buck will make more of an effort to get the job done fast, and the watching buck will be pretty eager to give it a go.

I have single row of cages open to the ground .. I have divider in each cage so they cant see each other or mate or anything of the sort.. I love it .. I have bucks at the end of the row... It is the best way I have them and no spraying or anything... so far :)

My bucks live next to my grow out cages which are empty all summer. The does are across the aisle in the doe hutch. Both in a barn but the buck/grow out section is the center row. Does have a solid back and end wall, the center cages are all open wire sides.

Keeps the does form making time while nursing and, the buck isn't interested in the youngsters next door.

My bucks pee a lot and they are on the top tier- I've gotten sprayed in the face. I need to rethink my cage arrangement. I'm sure the bucks would be much calmer if they couldn't see the girls.
