Blast this weather! Hot, cold, hot, cold!

I have a young kit about a month old that has yellow mucous on it's nose and paws- it looks really miserable, was sitting all hunched up at the front of the cage with its' head pressed against the wire. The others ones that I saw looked fine, but some were in the litter jug. When I picked it up, it arched its' head back, and stretched out, and when put down it made that funny noise that my bucks make when with the ladies.

I am going to cull it and feed it to one of the dogs. :(

Is it safe to feed it to the dogs?

Hmm- don't rightly know. Maybe I'll just skin it and put it in the maggot bucket instead. The Pups want a fully articulated skeleton, so I guess that is a better option.

__________ Thu Apr 26, 2012 9:46 am __________

I've decided not to skin it in case it is the dreaded "P word"... the maggot bucket is in the chicken coop, which is between the growout pens and the bunnybarn. Do you think it is safe to put in there, or should I take it further away and bury it?

It's done. What a bummer- that was a nice broken black with a full butterfly. I dug a hole just outside the kitchen window and planted a flowering plant that was in a 2 1/2 gallon pot on top of it.

Thanks, Maggie. My tender heart really wanted to bring it inside and provide warmth and loving care to see if it could be saved, but I know that is not the right course.

Once I warm up a bit I am going to sanitize the cage.

Hard as it was to do, culling the ill kit quickly was the wise thing to do. I am happy to report that the two other kits from this litter are both healthy and haven't shown the same symptoms. :)

So sorry, Sis...We had to do this with three kits out of a litter that had really bad nestbox eye and it would not clear up, no matter what we did...it is best, but not fun. {{{hugs}}}

Sorry you lost the kit, Annette, and I think you did the right thing by culling, but it's still sad. :( Hope the others will stay healthy for ya.

I'm right there with you on this ^()%&^*@$_*($#@*&^)(* weather!!! :evil: We have had the same thing, some 40 degree days, up to 60 degrees, and the next two days we are up into the 80's, and then back down to the 60's. I'm trying my best to regulate things in the indoor rabbitry, but I don't know that it's even possible with the way things are fluctuating like this.
