I am wondering to myself what is a smaller 4 class breed that has Ruby Eyed Whites. I have broken blue polish doe that I would like to get a REW buck for but breeders in PA do not breed REWS because they say they are freaky, demons, possessed bla bla blah. I like to change that because I am sick of it. They are rabbits and need to have a home too. Netherland Dwarfs are popular here. But I want to stick with two breeds max. Any Ideas? :)
Transport Maybe?

Britannia petites, florida white, holland lop, mini lop, mini rex, mini satin...

Many "pet people" are turned off by REWs, so it might be a hard slog for you to convince people to buy them even if they have wonderful temperaments.

Temperament is also inherited through lines, so if the breeders in your area say that the REWs are nuts, they probably are. If you want to change that you will need to cull heavily for temperament- are you committed enough to breeding nice REWs that you will terminally cull all of the kits from a breeding because they are nasty psycho bunnies?

If you are catering to the "pet market" I would focus on the colors people want, not the color (REW) that you think they should have.

Florida Whites are a small REW meat rabbit breed. I have no idea what their temperament is like though.

If you are looking at raising breeds for pets primarily, mini Rex might be an option for you.

I know that the most people don't like them. I just want to show people they are not creepy and can be sweet. I mainly want a show quality buck that can be a pet. I like the dwarfs but I hesitate to get one because I don't to put a off a backyard breeder vibe but all my dutch and polish are show quality, pedigreed and well typed. I breed because I want to better the breed. :)

Well, you know I'm all about those lops, about those lops, no straight ears (ok, I have some 'straight ears', but whatever).

How about Holland Lops?
You can't get much more adorable than a rew lop-eared rabbit. :D

__________ Wed Jul 01, 2015 7:26 am __________

As for people being freaked out about demon posession and such, wow... could you possibly live in a more backward place than I do?? People are pretty backward here, but I've never heard that.

As a point of concern, or at least it would be here, if people think you're raising 'demon possessed' animals, they may naturally conclude that you are in league with the devil and do harm to you, your property, your family, your rabbits... at least that's what I would worry about here. :x

It is not possible to "show" people how nice they are, I've had REW Mini Rex/Holland Lops/New Zealand Whites/Lionheads/Velveteens/English Lops/Netherland Dwarfs/Mini Lops/Jersey Woolies just to name a few and no matter how sweet the rabbit was would change a person's mind that did not like rews. So find a breed you like, you can deal with not being able to sell a single one, and enjoy. Do not count on any sales of any kind with REWs.

Susie570, people believe that here too. The only ones I ever sold REW offspring to were people that were purchasing for breeding or showing, not one sold for a pet ever. That spans since I started with purebred rabbits in 2001 and before (meat mutts) that even.

There are velveteen lops in REW, and most are sweet as pie. But everyone here is correct, lots of people just don't like them. It's the same with lots of other animals too. When I was in high school and college I raised rats for pets and couldn't sell rews other than as snake food. Even my own mom, who was very supportive of my rats and now likes my rabbits, doesn't like the rews. Like many others, she says they are creepy.

If you really want them, then get them... FOR YOU. Just be ready to cull or sell as food if you can't find homes for the rews you can't keep.

I hate REW  I wouldn't call them creepy but I don't like anything red or pink eyed. Being solid white is also so boring. Like others have said, it doesn't matter how nice your rew are. You will not sell one as a pet. People don't care. Part of what they want in a pet is an appealing look and if rew is not appealing to them (which is nearly all pet buyers) then they will not buy it no matter the personality or other characteristics. You will only sell to breeders and if breeders don't think they can sell rew they probably won't buy them either. Raising them to further the breed and color probably won't work out unless you travel far a lot and can extend your range of buyers and sellers. You might do well on the table if you buy better quality out of state and are one of a small minority showing rew in a breed but you will have to be prepared to cull by killing anything you don't keep as a breeder. You may be able to find a cull buyer so you won't have to do it yourself but your rabbits will mostly be feeder animals.

I love my rew & pew rabbits..they are meat mutts but they are the sweetest most docile rabbits..I think they are beautiful..I don't understand how anyone can say they are evil or creepy. My white FG will lay on your lap or shoulder like a puppy.. rabbits are sweet and loving..people are stupid. .
But look at the plight of the black cat to see just how ignorant and superstitious people are...how many sweet kitties are abused, tortured, and killed..just because of fur and eye color....yep..people are stupid.

Pennsylvanians can be pretty weird, in my experience...

Not as weird as Ohio (says the girl that grew up in Pittsburgh ;) )

i am one of those people who doesn't like REW.

The Red eyes aren't appealing, and I have this thing with solid rabbits being less interesting to me, I like patterns that catch the eye. Don't like brokens because pelts are hard to match. So I keep agoutis and shaded.

After not having REWs for three years, I just got two litters with a total of 6 REWs. Some I will keep only if does, but when space becomes and issue REWs and Blacks get culled first.

i wouldn't mind some BEWs, but that's a another set of challenges in itself.

yes I know I'm odd, but I did grow up in Pa, lol

Yeah, my experiences in OH were pretty much all weird too.

From someone who grew up on a navy base in San Diego...the whole east coast is kind of strange.

Let me clear this up. I want a REW because they are interesting to me. I don't care about what other think about them. I know most pet buyers don't like them. I am prepared to cull the REWS like crazy. At least I know they had a good life :) I am doing this for me not anyone else. Rabbits are rabbits. Now off to look for that REW herd buck. :)

I have a male REW fuzzy lop that is really gentle. Most lops I've seen are pretty lay back.
