As the topic says, the skin was torn off the rump of a 1 month old. By the time I saw it puss had already started to form under the flap. I cut the loose skin off, tried to get the puss off, wiped it down with alcohol and sprayed some Blue Coat on it. What else do I do till its 12 weeks.

Ouch! :x

I think you have done all you can for now. If you see more pus, I would rinse it with a weak betadine solution. You can buy small bottles of "povidine iodine" at the pharmacy, which is basically the same thing but in smaller quantities.

The skin should granulate in over time, and as long as the "silver skin" is intact it will probably heal pretty quickly. Just keep the little guy as clean as you can until then.

I use Blue Kote with my kit injuries. Not sure if you have that handy (I had it around because of the goats) but its very helpful. Just be careful not to get it on your hands or clothes. It stays even with tons of washing.

Thanks you two. I've been keeping an eye on him and he still seems to be doing ok. One thing I'm afraid of is that the skin which was still loose after cutting the majority of it off will continue to peel. I hope that doesn't happen but I suppose only time will tell.

...Oh oh oh I know. I can take the rabbit pelts from some of the rabbits I've dispatched and glue them on him! Perfect! I'm a genius.

That's good! I hope he hangs in there. :good-luck:

If the skin has been torn from the underlying connective tissue, the big worry is infection. Bacteria love a nice warm, moist environment. It would be a good idea to flush the area with a weak betadine solution once or twice a day to hopefully prevent that. You can use a rubber bulb syringe ("snot sucker" in the parlance of parents of infants) to squirt it under the flaps.

Sounds more like he's trying to make bunny toupees. Well, guess it beats a comb-over.

Seriously though--hope the bun comes through ok!

You're right! It does sound more like a harepiece, doesn't it?

Anyway, I checked on the trouper last night and was suprised that everything was healing up rapidly. It amazes me how fast they can recover.

That's great news! Yes, the little guys have amazing healing ability. An injury like that in a mature animal would surely result in infection.

I think it probably has to do with the fact that the kits are growing so fast and have such rapid cell growth. :?

If he wasn't destined to be dinner, I would say you need to name him/her Toupee!

Glad to know he's better and looking good!

:rotfl: that's awesome Farmer. It looks as though that rabbit has daggers come out of it's eyes at you.

Gotta admit, it's a picture I pulled from the net. I'd give credit if there was a name. I've not dressed up the buns, but I did stick a hat on the cat at halloween. His reaction made the look on the face of the bun seem loving. Anyway, just saw this and wanted to give credit to whoever the person was that made their bun look like a chunky hairy Marilyn Monroe. Hope your Toupee recovered!
