I have a young Buck that was just given to me. He was dumped into someone's yard that was unable to take care of a rabbit. They took him to my feed store and the feed store called me to come look at him. I have not seen a Silver Fox in person but have seen picture. He is a nice compact youngster with all the ear marks of a Silver Fox, not sure of the weight yet. BUT!!! from what Ive read I would almost bet thats what he is. I will try and get a picture of him tomorrow and post it on here.

Yess MSD he is in quarantine

Sky do you have a picture of yours??

This kid has a wonderfully thick coat and a nice chunky body. He is a love to handle Im thinking of using him in the spring when he is older to put with some meaty girls

I don't know if he is a Silver Fox. Their coats look long and "messy" to me, being used to Rex coats as I am. Your buck looks like he has a much smoother coat.

I think he is a very handsome bunny, whatever he may be. :)

Skysthelimit they are Pretty I like the look, But mine doesnt look quite so "Hairy" he is slicker so maybe he is a cross but he sure is a BEEFY boy. I will watch him over the winter and see how he develops since he still is only about 6/7 months old. A friend is bringing over a GOOD scale today and we will weigh him. That will give me a better idea where he is in a growth pattern. Who knows he could add some bulk to a good fryer. Either way He is here happy and more than likely healthy from the looks of it. Thanks everyone for the feedback :-D

Just looking at the picture, I believe that is a Silver. They originated in France hundreds of years ago, and are one of the handful of breeds that usually gets mentioned when folks are debating which breed is the oldest. They aren't particularly common. Very pretty.

The way to tell is the lay of the coat. The Silver Fox has that unique coat that just stays whichever way you brush it. The Silver has a flyback coat. Gorgeous rabbit- congrats.

Another way to tell if it's an Argent, his coat will lighten slightly (though not much maybe, since he's almost grown. Argents are born black, and grow "silvered" as they age. I have one purebred buck who looks a lot like yours, and 2 does that are crossed with Silver Fox (more Argent though). From what I have read of the Silver Fox, it was likely developed from the Argents in part (the guy who orignated the breed kept his "formula" secret, just like coke)! I don't think the pure SF's change color much though. Below are 2 photos of one of the does who is 7/8 Argent, and 1/8 SF, you can see how much she changed from 2 months old to 4 months old.

Thank you uhurubuns,He may be a cross with a Silver but his coat isnt quite as flyaway or textured as the two Skysthelimit has or the Argent, He is a pretty boy and I like his look so he will stay for a while. His coat almost feels like a Rex its soft and shiny. Who know's I like his personality and his look so :-D Just need to name him

__________ Tue Aug 28, 2012 7:05 pm __________

Dragonlady she is Pretty :) I like her alot. Her coat looks different from this boy but I like her looks as well

Oh, if he's 6/7 mos old and doesn't look like Dotty (she's 14 weeks old) then I would probably say not pure silver fox.

Silver fox are born black and develop as they get older.

Guard hairs are too long to be a rex. It's not just about softness, but a velvet like feeling, like when you put your hand on velvet and leave a hand print. All hairs are the same length, which give it's plushness.
