My four year old herd sire is sick, hoping you guys can help me figure out why.

The only thing that has changed is that his feed intake has dropped, and he has runny poo. It's not the cecotrophs, or what ever those things are called, I can't ever remember the correct term, but his normal poop is suddenly very runny. No mucous, just runny.

Nothing has changed in his diet. He gets free choice of 18% pellets and grass hay, with papaya enzyme tablets 2x weekly and a small amount of birdseed once a week that he usually just uses as confetti around his cage.

Could it be disease related? Not sure why he would suddenly up and get sick when he was, and everyone else still is, as fit as a whistle. No new rabbits bringing anything in either.

Would like very much to keep him around, as he carries chinchilla and I was an idiot and didn't save back any kits from his previous litters thinking he was good to go for another couple years at least.

Thanks in advance.

Not being sure of the cause, I would just treat the symptom.

I would give him probiotic paste and electrolytes. If you have access to the lawn weeds shepherd's purse and plantain or strawberry, blackberry, or raspberry leaves that will help firm his stool. You might also try canned pumpkin.

I hope he gets better. :clover:

He has oatmeal now, and he's been free fed his whole life (including well before I got him) and never had any issues. Actually, since this problem has occurred, his feed intake has gone down, so I see your point, but I really don't think that may be the issue.

Just confused. Hopefully the oatmeal will help. Will give him some probios tonight too, and couldn't get my hands on any gatorade powder mix and buying bottles was a bit pricey (in between paychecks right now, as is the life of all early twenties kids trying to get started!) so I'll have to find that old recipe on this site for an electrolyte mix. I doubt he'd be bummed if I just dumped some sugar or honey in his water bowl, but I seriously doubt just a sugar high will help him on it's own!

Yes, he ate a bit and then started goofing off again. If it weren't for the runs and the lower food intake, you'd never think anything was up. Still acting like himself.

It might be wise to take his pellets away for a day or two and just give oatmeal and hay as his primary feed.
