Full blown weight loss, snotty nose, dirty mouth, lost the hair off her dewlap... The other 2 rabbits in the room are showing no symptoms thankfully. I'm putting her down today. Josh is beating himself up about not making a vet appointment when I first said something seemed wrong but I told him we're not treating her just to have a carrier. Hope it doesn't get in to the rest of the rabbitry because I have to take her there to put her down but I'm going to have him do all the rabbit chores and not touch anything myself.

So sorry! I will caution you to be VERY diligent with disinfecting EVERYTHING that Shimo came into contact with and you would quarantine any other rabbits she was around.

Ok I just put a bullet in my favorite leash trained house rabbit. Everything is sterilized. Now I can disassemble with some expensive raspberry mead and hope I don't watch my rabbits die one by one.

__________ Thu Nov 15, 2012 2:01 am __________

I believe the newest guinea pigs brought in the illness and were housed next to shimo with a wire divider. Will they be carriers for life? Should I treat them with something to kill it or just hope all my rabbits are immune to this strain?

My heartfelt condolences for your loss of your sweet Shimo.

I would be afraid to "just" treat, and would probably just "wait and see". Hoping no others catch what the new piggies brought to your home.

Again, so sorry about your loss.

yes, they will be carriers for life. Some of them have it and you wouldnt know it .. But dont go killing all animals thinking that. .. I am sorry that you had to put your favorite down... But rabbits dont feel well when they do have it. Just like us with a cold but worse. You cant treat for pasturella as it hides in there. IT is so highly contagious. So really watch your other rabbits for any sneezing ect. It could take up to a month to notice anything.

I would keep those Gpigs FAR away from my rabbits. Care for them LAST to avoid cross-contaminating. Honestly? I would cull the pigs if I was pretty sure they carried it....

I spent a couple $100 getting those guinea pigs so I'm not going to cull them. They are show stock from half way across the country.

Are they worth the rest of your rabbits? Have you contacted the breeder to discuss it? Obviously, it is best for you to do what you feel is best for yourself and your herd, but I would be very hesitant to keep animals that I knew were carrying an illness that could potentially kill the rest of my herd. Just something to think about...
