Okay, so... I have a litter of Vlops, the doe is mine, the buck was someone else. I agreed to give her one kit from the litter in exchange for breeding Santana to him.

Santana has kindled 7, and they've all been fed, so now I'm wondering... who gets the prefix?

I picked the buck and doe. She brought the buck here and picked him up, but I had him for about a week, and did the actual breeding without her being here. I'm obviously raising the kits here(while I like and trust this woman, I will not send my breeding rabbits out. Ever.)

I'm thinking that the kit she gets in payment can have her prefix, and *possibly* any she buys, but it'll go on my pedigree template. Does that make sense?

this is how I do it for a shared litter.

The one the owner of the buck takes uses their prefix.
The one that I keep has my prefix.

The rest are shared...half getting one prefix, half the other. Or if all petted out, no prefix used.

There are some breeders who say Born at my place they get MY prefix regardless.
But if you had no say in the breeding of the rabbit why should you take the credit for it? Give credit where it is due, it's no shame to you and gives honour where it is due.

I learned that growing up with holsteins...the breeder gets the credit not the buyer.

Well, I knew that, like with the doe I bought from you, the breeding was done by you when you still had both rabbits, the kits get your prefix. The vlop kits, the breeder allowed me to put my prefix on the kits, though she bred the doe(I would have been fine with her prefix for my kit.)

I was unsure as to this particular situation. I didn't think to ask before the kits were born, as I was most worried about Santana not being an idiot. We had discussed and decided on the free kit for a breeding fee, but not the prefix.

These guys probably won't be petted out... although I have a friend who wants one, I'm trying to talk her into taking a boy and not fixing him, so I can breed him later on, lol! If not, Jenn is thinking she wants to buy extras. I think she should have her prefix on their pedigree as well. And then any sold to anyone else, we put both, or something? I've seen rabbits with two prefixes, I think.

Always figure it out before hand :)

Usually I split regardless unless I own the buck and doe. Sometimes the breeder will say otherwise, but splitting is fair. Some breeders don't like splitting because some people will use the name of good breeders and sell the whole litter as show quality and then it looks bad on them and they rather not associated themselves.

I've learned my lesson with co-breedings and I don't think I'll ever do them again. To much grey area unless something is written out and documented.

I go by the whole, born on my place it gets my prefix thing. If one of my does are bred to someone else's buck, it's because I chose the breeding. I made the decision to cross those two rabbits to see what the outcome would be. If someone wants to breed to one of my bucks, well, then they chose that breeding, they can claim right to prefix. I wouldn't let anyone use my prefix for rabbits born in their place, simply because like Peach said, I can't control who they sell or not. If someone else were to sell a crappy quality kit as show quality with my rabbitry's name on it, it wouldn't look good for my stock.

That's how most of the breeders around here do it.

Same here. That's how we do it with dogs, where stud interactions are common place. So I do my rabbits the same. Except for one kit back deal, dam was sold to me bred with the promise of a kit back. The breeder named the kit, but I was giving it back to the original breeder of the dam.

I sent her a message, she said that she was happy just to have the ones she was buying under her prefix. So any that I sell will go under mine, her free ones and any she buys go under hers, but they all go on my pedigree template.
