I just got off the phone from California dept. food and agriculture. I was told it is ok for me to see rabbit meat to the consumer. I can not sell to stores or restaurants though. He told me as long as it is raised, butchered and sold on my premises to the consumer then it is ok. I am sending him a email and he is sending me information. thought I would let you all know what I found out. :D

Way to go, Demamma! :p

The only thing that concerns me is the "sold on your premises" part. It would be so-o-o easy for ARA's to come and "rescue" your herd when you aren't home. Personally I'm not too worried about activists in my area, but it might be a concern for those in more urban areas.

I live about 50 miles from Bakersfield, so it would be quite a drive for my buyers. I would rather transport to BF.

 I wonder if they came to your premises once if delivery would then be okay?

He told me I had to raise butcher and sale on my property. So no delivering. I am going to sell by word of mouth no advertising. At least for now. Not much chance of ARA's in my town. We are a rural farming community. The police would probably love to play with the ARAist's. I also live a block from the court house and police station so I am not concerned. My main concern here is some kids messing with my animals. I think if you have enough property have them meet you at the very edge. (or borrow your neighbors property). He did mention that there might be county rules for use of property but I am remaining dumb there on purpose.

interestingly enough I was just talking to a guy in san diego, california. And he sells at the farmers market said that there is an exception for rabbits and chicken and you do not need to be a USDA certified processing center. Sells for $8lb dressed. Giving me some ideas!

If you can, when he emails you the info, share it here. It would be nice to see what California has to say about rabbit meat sales. Although, I'm planning on just selling to friends and family so I won't be advertising or anything.

The guy from CDFA stressed I had to sell the meat directly from my property. I wonder if there is another law about farmers markets? something more to look into. another day.I will share the email he sends me. :mailman:

__________ Tue Oct 02, 2012 2:50 pm __________

I got a reply. He sent me a pdf file with information about rabbits and poultry. I am not able to cut and paste it. If anyone would like me to send them a copy send me a note with your email. I do not know if there is any way to post it here. From what it is saying selling rabbit meat is allowed at farmers markets.

Thanks, Demamma!

When I went to my inbox it wasn't there. :(

It was in my "Junk Mail"! :)

I haven't read the info yet- still working on the canned rabbit meat- but I will get to it soon.

ARA?

The price of meals can be affected by a variety of aspects, from the weather to political uncertainty. In England, increasing food costs are resulting in a meteoric increase in meat thefts. Resource for this article: Meat theft increasing the cost of dinner in the UK. Prices of food like meat and vegetables are totally increasing because of a lot demands from the consumers. If you need help with your expenses, you should try availing a cash advance and you will be able to buy the things that you need in order to cook your meal.

Well what kinda human was it? Fast food feed? home cooking feed? That changes it. As far as PeTa I think some of the stuff they do is good. The fact is a lot of animals are not being treated the way they need to be. Now the you can only eat green food crap is stupid and is for the most part makes them look like a joke.

My problem with PETA is they say they rescue animals then they are the ones killing them. They so called rescued a group of dogs then killed them and dumped them in dumpsters. I also do not believe in harrassment, destruction and bullying is the right way to handle things. Their shelters kill more dogs and cats than most local pounds. I do believe there are a lot of nice people who got sucked into PETA not relizing what is happening. Too many good people and animals have been hurt by PETA. I do agree that some animals are not treated as good as they should be though I do not feel PETA is the solution.

100% with Demamma. Peta kills some 90% of the animals they "rescue", the vast majority within the first 24 hours of taking them in. I do not believe in no-kill shelters. I do believe that it is unkind and wrong not to put down animals that are aggressive or ill, as these animals would never have a hope of being adopted. But killing them so quickly gives you very little time to see what an animal's true condition is. Is it aggressive, or just scared? They have killed animals that their own employees described as wonderful or perfect.

They and the Humane Society consider farm animals to be abused, and encourage and foster the activists who raid people's rabbitries and steal their rabbits. They'll claim that they found the rabbits in "deplorable conditions", when the conditions are normal for any family farm. If a rabbits isn't inside with free reign of the house, eating carrots and lettuce, then it's being abused and needs to be "rescued". So they steal them and begin spaying and neutering and adopting them immediately, before you've had a chance to say anything about it. Your breeding program? Over. Meat rabbits? Gone.

I am sad and angry every time I see an abused animal. So far, living here, I have seen two abused dogs. One, starved for love, literally crawled flat on her belly to me, scared that I would beat her, but hopeful and desperate that I would pet her. Another wanders the street, walking nearly sideways to walk straight, because a badly dislocated or broken hip has healed that way.

But PETA's tactics are not the answer.
