SCREAMING

These were the rabbits that i bought from the older gentleman. I just wasnt to please with them. So they are in the freezer. Except the one that had fur mites. She didnt get cleaned. To much chemicals from the treatments in her. I just didnt want to take any chance with my dogs. I
did 6 rabbit today. I wasnt impress this time. They were older than i like to do them. Harder to skin and to kill them was harder too. What is it with rabbit you take them out of the cage and they start screaming. How do you stop that from happening. As soon you turn them upside down . That is when they start.

They think you are trying to kill them or you are scaring the crud outta them, obviously they will loose it. Most cull screamers, same with being aggressive or bad moms. I had 2 litters that were screamers as kits, but the older they got, the less they did it and now they never do.

If you use a sharp knife, then there are no tough hides. I use a knife on all of mine for around the waist, back or other area where the skin is attached a lot firmer.

These are ranging in age from 3 to 5 months old. I didnt think they still scream at that age.

Never had one that old scream...but I would bet that they were not handled "gently" at their previous home.

if rabbits aren't held enough or aren't used to people they have a tendency to scream because MOST rabbits (but not all) are hardwired to know if their feet are off the ground something wants to eat them so they scream (it's a defense mechanism).

My best guess is that he didn't handle them enough.

OR they were a flightier line of rabbits. Either way, screamers get culled. Calmer rabbits work well for most folks.

I guess i did a good thing. I wasnt to happy about them when my husband brought them home for me. I never had rabbits that old scream either. That is why i posted. I am glad they are in the freezer. I dont want that in my herd.<br /><br />__________ Tue Sep 11, 2012 10:46 am __________<br /><br />

Wow, I never have had ANY rabbits scream from just pulling them out of the cage! I have only heard a rabbit scream twice in my life, once being the first time I tried (and did not succeed) to kill a rabbit, and the other when a neighborhood dog had a friend's rabbit by the hind leg. I do hope none of mine ever scream!
