I had a doe breeder die on me yesterday. I thought she "might" have been pregnant after I had palpated her so when I cut her open I searched for any kits. I didn't find any thankfully but I did find a sac that was filled with some kind of..."liquid". I don't know what the liquid was and before you go for the obvious answer it wasn't pee. She had peed all the urine out when I picked her up since she was already dead. This sac was completely full of this liquid. I took the sac out and cut it open to see what it might have been. All the liquid drained out and I took a very cautious sniff of it just to make sure but the liquid did not stink.

Anyone have any clue what this was. She's not the only one that I've felt this in when palpating and of course I've only felt them in does....since I don't make it a habit of palpating bucks.

Sure the sack wasn't the uterus? :? Maybe it was infected? I've cut open those little fetus bubbles (the "grapes" you feel for when palpating) before and there was icky slime-ish fluid and to me it smelled icky and made me gag.

Maybe some type of cyst on the reproductive organs. Cysts can fill with various things from straight liquid to waxy sebum and not smell off. When we were cutting up a horse for equine anatomy they popped a large cyst on the ovary and showered everyone's legs in horse cyst fluid. Luckily I was standing in the back. Disgusting but it had no smell.

That's actually also what my wife thought it might be. I always though Cysts were filled with pus type liquid but then again I've never opened one before. Would a large cyst, say....a bit larger than a golf ball keep her from getting pregnant and what causes cysts to form? While we're at it, besides killing them or having surgery, how do you get one to go away?

The short answer to having them go away is "They don't". I know this from personal experience and yes they can be as small as a pencil eraser in size to almost softball size depending on the size of the critter. Yes it can prevent them from getting pregnant as well.

If there aren't health complications ovarian cysts actually come and go on their own fairly frequently with no ill effects. When there are hormone or other disorders the problem becomes serious and will eventually lead to sterility. In animals they basically cull themselves out of your herd by no longer reproducing. Spaying is the only treatment generally used in animals.

Thanks for the quick answers.

Is there an easy way to be sure that what is back there is a cyst? I'd hate to think it was a cyst, cull the rabbit and then just find out she really had to go pee :/
