How is this done..Do you mix it with a whole 50 lb bag of pellets or just mix a little in when filling there feeders? Is it ok for 4 week old kits? Dan

__________ Fri Jul 20, 2012 2:02 am __________

Also is the Black oil sunflower seeds the ones everyone is talking about? Thanks..Dan

Rolled oats are great for kits. When I first started feeding a grain mix I gave it as a separate feeding to prevent feed scratching. Now I don't feed pellets at all, so just have oats as part of my mix.

Yes. Commonly sold for wild birds.

When you say grain mix what are you referring to?

4lbs barley
4lbs oats
2lbs BOSS
2lbs Beet Pulp (shreds)

The mix may have other ingredients added periodically (such as wheat berries and split green peas) as I rotate grains/legumes out of our food stores.

Dan, be careful not to let your rabbits go on a strict regimen of oats and start ignoring their pellets. Sometimes, it helps in keeping their diets up during stress periods, but other times they get in through their thick heads that it's all they're going to eat.

I was just going to mix a little in with there pellets, kinda of a whoa what is this I found..lol...Dan

I usually just put it on the top of the pellets, or they tend to scratch for it and waste pellets.

I use a mixture of barley, rolled oats, BOSS(black oil sunflower seeds), safflower and flax seeds. I add a 1/2-1 teaspoon to top of the fed. I have one doe who does scratch to get all of it so I feed her 1/2 her pellets in morning and the other 1/2 at night.
