I butchered a completely healthy rabbit today and found some horribly scarred lungs!
I got this bunny from a family who wanted her gone so I dont know the history other than she was born in Januray 2012. She had chased, scratched and/or bitten everyone in the family and when the daughter needed a couple stitches it was the last straw.
I told them I would try and rehabilitate her and find her a home but if not she would be 'disposed of'.
I did my best but she was just too unpredictable in her aggression. I managed to eliminate the cage guarding and her chasing and biting ankles but you would be sitting on the floor with her watching TV and for no apparent reason she'd chomp down or start clawing at you.
She never showed any signs of illness while in my care over the last 3 1/2 months and the pockets on the lungs were not full of puss but a clear liquid that I assume is normal lung fluid. The poor girl had basically one functioning lung and that one wasn't working at 100% either.
I believe she must have had an infection in her past that she got over or was treated for and her lungs were permenantly scarred. Her liver was also very pale so I am leaning towards her being treated with drugs and she developed liver damage as well.
I just found it quite shocking as I have never had disease in my rabbitry (knock on wood ) and haven't seen it first hand.
