i am about to upload the video i made to youtube. gosh that has become quite useful!

here are my notes that i have been keeping about her:

2/21/2012 bred at about 11AM. tried to rebreed at 8PM but wouldnt lift for him.

3/21/2012 found a bite of pulled fur in wire part of hutch. had one kit at about 6:30 evening,

had another in there at about 9 evening. fat and seemingly healthy. adopted over the 2 runty

dutch kits, they were smaller then her two.

3/22/2012 the wrinkly runt died around noon. her kits and other runt look fine

3/23/2012 found 4 LH kits and dutch adopted kit in her nest along with one dead kit and two

peices (two hearts possibly?) the live ones look fine. the pieces looked identical, same size.

about the size of my thumbnail.

i really have no idea what happened.... does this just happen sometimes? she was only bred the once so she shouldnt have had two different side pregnancy as was talked about not long ago.
i'm rather at a loss for an explaination

The pieces could be placenta. Sometimes animals (and humans) will stop their labor if they feel threatened in some way. Possibly, the dead kit was on its way when labor stopped so it died before delivery.

Congrats on the new kits, anyway! That is a good sized litter for a little rabbit. :)

I haven't heard of them going that long too often, but it isn't unheard of. The pieces probably are placenta, and she didn't get everything cleaned up.

Congratulations! :bouncy:

this was not placenta unless rabbits placenta is nothing like any other animal placenta and looks like organs... :/

you can kinda see the peices i'm talkin about in the video

__________ Fri Mar 23, 2012 12:38 pm __________

this is this does first litter since i have had her but the person i bought them (the trio) from said each doe has had several litters. this doe was born sept 23, 2007 so she is gettin older. on a couple rabbit groups i joined on facebook most people said at this age most LH does are retired, being retired soon, or if they are still being bred then they usually start giving litters of one or two that are usually DOAs.

i was hoping to get a few starter litters from her to keep them for future breeders. the other doe and the buck are of unknown age but i think they are about the same age as the doe in question but maybe a year or so younger.

is there any way to guesstimate how old they are..?

5 or 6 years for any doe, breeding wise, can be iffy from what I've dealt with unless they are on a regular breeding schedule and its stuck to. When numbers in litters start to decline is when I stop, could be 4 or could be 9 depends upon the doe in question's genetics. I've had LH's produce well over their 8 yrs old mark and got what I needed and didn't breed any more. These were ones I'd purchased not bred myself and was absolute stuck on getting babes from them. That is part of placentas not part of kids, hearts and other organs would not look like that nor would parts of bodies...have found it many times with new moms or moms that zip through birthing and can't clean up quick enough, its not unusual for a nervous or overly hyper doe to forget or miss some at clean up...again this is especially true if kids were coming too fast to keep up with. If she was interrupted, she could've stopped and waited to she thought things were 'ok' to her...I've done that and had babies 2 up to 4 days apart :( Not my happiest moments and why I do not keep nervous nellies any more, if I can't go in while they're busy with out issues, they don't stay.

Off topic BUT is youtube a good place to post? I've seen soo many bashings on youtube it made me question whether to share rabbit videos or not there. Especially with the raids and such.

Both of my hollands had dead kits. Both had kits on different days, one one day, another a day later. None of the kits looked well formed. Both of these were first timers, one was two years old. Both had better have viable litters the next time, or there won't be a third.

I can't see videos, so I don't know what we're looking at lol, but rabbit placentas just look like bloody goop from what I've seen.

Heart had a chunk in the nest looked like a clump of chicken meat. Considering there were 11, I think she did a pretty good job cleaning up.

the two pieces in the nestbox are placenta.

I've had a doe who kindled over three days. I've had other does kindle over two days.

So it happens. One never quite gets why some rabbits do what they do.
