This was a nest box injury inflicted by a too long toenail--all the more reason to trim your doe's nails before they kindle!!! This baby will never go to competition with the scarring that'll be apparent, but I need everyone's advice.

The babies are 36 hours old now and I'm pretty sure the white bubbles are pockets of infection. I'm going to go in with a needle and drain them, wash it out, but what else should I apply? I am concerned with the black band that bisects the ear. As you can see from both pics it doesn't go all the way through, but I am worried that I should be doing something else for it.

Thanks for your advice in everything.

:yeahthat: I trim the doe's nails the day they are bred and again about a week prior.

Interesting- I have never seen that happen before. If you have organic honey, I would slather the ear with that. It is antibacterial. Another good choice would be Blu-Kote, which is both anti-fungal and antibacterial.

I would make a warm solution of Betadine and water (povidone iodine is basically the same thing, if you have that available) and soak a piece of gauze or a cotton ball with it and apply that to the ear for a bit... I think that is just a scab, and if so it will soften up.

I would just dab a bit of iodine on the ear and leave it alone.

Baby rabbits grow so fast they almost always heal from the inside out so abscesses are rarely an issue

I agree that the black band is a scab and picking it off will just invite infection in

And I would not count this guy out as being unshowable just yet :)
