the kits were 6.5 wks old and still with the doe. eating & drinking good. i went to get them to deliver them, and their butts were covered in diarrhea and mucous was coming out. i called the lady & she said she will take them anyway. i said i will refund her if they die from the sickness. any ideas what this is? they were only fed hay and pellets. sorry, no pictures.

i thought they get that if they were weaned too early, but these kittens were never weaned. obviously i will have to get to a computer to research this...i am using a psp for internet right now. not cool. can barely type on it.
thanks mary ann

Unfortunately, it does sound like enteritis. I agree with removing the pellets and feeding grass hay. Some people also give them kitchen oatmeal. The lawn weeds plantain and shepherd's purse may help clear up the diarrhea and also the leaves of raspberry, blackberry and strawberry.

You don't want to further stress the kits by moving them to a new home. They will need all the help they can get to make it as it is.

This cold snap could be a factor. Sudden changes in weather seem to be related to enteritis.

You may want to read this recent thread on the subject:

Get some Probios paste or Benebac, any kind of probiotic. That will also help along with hay, oatmeal and plantain leaves...

We cant get any probiotic paste here...If they get to a point where they are getting sluggish, not eating or huddling together,.
Pick up neo-Chlor. IT is amazing stuff and if you catch it before they start to go off feed or stay in the corner...It will save them .YOu can get it at M&Rs in town. If they closed by the time you get of work. Just phone i have some for you.

oh ya one more thing. YOu can also give them some straw . I would give some straw just in the one feeding. That helps alot with the poops.

i have neo chlor for our calves. i use just a 1/4 tsp for calves, twice a day .... how much for the kits? just a sprinkle in their water bottle?
thanks all for the suggestions and links. really helpful.

one teaspoon per gallon. Make sure that is all the water they can drink.IF they are not drinking. You have to syringe it .Good luck and keep us updated on how it goes.Remember to put a handful of clean straw for them to nipple on only with there hay for one day. If they become bloated. I suggest crushing up some gas x tablets. Lets hope it dosnt get that far.Make sure you do the mom also. She can get it to.
This is one of the reasons why i am going natural diet.

__________ Mon Apr 23, 2012 1:00 pm __________

Just thinking about this cold weather we are getting and the possible connection between that and enteritis... Are the kits in a good warm place? Can you give them a cardboard carton stuffed with hay or straw so that they can keep good and warm... or perhaps put a blanket over the cage? I am not certain this will help, but I think it is worth a shot.

Update: the kits are doing good, normal poop, eating and drinking fine, gaining weight nicely. Thanks for all the advice RT folks. I really appreciate it. :) .... It sucks going through these things, but I learn from them, and can maybe help others as well... And thanks Mary Ann for all the good advice last night in the rain, lol. And for the rabbits. :) my mother and sister were thrilled.

I'm glad to read a happy ending. I recently saved a few rabbits thanks to what I've learned from the fine folks here at RT. God bless 'em!
