Ok, I have a little doe who has the softest shortest plushest fur I've ever felt ... who is cali marked. I know she's not a pure and I'm not sure what the parents are. However, if I wanted to try and breed for that nice soft plush fur with one of my existing cali marked meat mutt bucks, would I be able to get that soft plush fur?

Here's the most recent picture of her.

This is the buck I'm thinking about using.

I'm guessing that she has rex fur, but it's hard to tell. If she is rex furred, you will need to breed her with a buck that either has rex fur or carries the gene for it to get babies with rex fur. :)

If you don't have one, you could keep a buck out her her litter to breed back to her.

Well that's kinda a bummer lol

I don't have another rex fur rabbit and with 16 rabbits already and not enough room ... well ... yet ;)

Ah well, such is life. I'll probably keep and breed her to the cali marked buck anyway and see what happens! :)

Hmmm ... so Dood ... because she has the short fur ... she might/will pass it on to offspring? That would work, as long as one who gets it is a male!

Food for thought ....

Carol,

unless she is bred to a Rex fur carrier, you wont see any Rex furred kits in her litter. However, they will all be carrying one copy of the Rex gene, so when bred to one another or back to Crystal, you will get some Rex furred kits. After that, Rex furred x Rex furred= all Rex furred.

I am assuming it is a recessive trait, if it's dominant then half her kits with your buck will have her fur.

So, if it is recessive she carries two recessive copies and all of her kits will look normal but be carriers (unless its in-complete) When she is bred back to a son, 50% should have the plush coat.

Does she have the Rex whiskers?

Are the rex whiskers curly instead of straight? Because if so, then yes. :)

__________ Tue Feb 05, 2013 6:21 pm __________

Oh, and she's only about 6 weeks old. It will be quite a while before she's old enough to breed.

Ok. I wanted to see if that was a baby coat or not. Looks a little longish on the sides to be Rex, but I had a beautiful REW buck that had prominent guard hairs, and his coat was a bit longish. If it is a baby coat, there is a possibility that it will molt out into a more normal coat.

Hmm. I will have to see if I can get some better pictures of her so that you can see her fur and whiskers better.

She's the one that the previous owner said was the results of a breeding with a "chinchilla" but I'm not really sure what he meant by that. Does that shed some light on her possible genetics?

__________ Thu Feb 07, 2013 1:17 pm __________

Here are a couple more pictures I took yesterday. I don't think the lighting was good enough in the first picture to really show how short and plush the fur is. But the second picture I took of her right behind her ears and you can really see it much better.

There are 3 Chinchilla breeds (Standard, American and Giant) and they were bred to resemble the rodent of the same name so they do have a very nice, plush coat but are not Rex.

Chinchilla is also a color of rabbit that is found in many breeds, including Rex, so this could be what the breeder meant as well.

If the colour is in her heritage and hiding under her white coat then if bred to a coloured rabbit you may get chinchilla kits

Thanks Dood.

The whole comment was something like ... "she's the result of a breeding with a chinchilla so she won't get as big as the rest."

To be honest, it really doesn't matter much to me! LOL

I'll breed her to solid & cali marked (at different times of course) and see what she gives me. It'll be interesting, that's for sure!
