What is a peanut? (In simple terms please so I will understand) And obviously I am not talking food here LOL
Pros? Cons? Causes? Genetics? Certain breeds? Do dutch or lionheads have any?
Peanuts are a genetic deformity, a fatal gene combination of two dwarf genes.
There are no pros/cons for them, as they do not tend to survive. It's like a 99.5% mortality rate(that .5% is only there because someone once said that they had a peanut live to maturity, but it may have just been a really small runt). I cull mine as soon as I find them, as I find that they starve to death, which is a horrible way to go.
They are visibly recognizable by having a domed head, very short ears, and underdeveloped hind quarters.
Any rabbit that has the dwarf gene can have peanuts if bred to another rabbit with the dwarf gene. So Lionheads can have peanuts... I don't think dutch are a dwarf breed, so I don't think they can have them, but someone will correct me if I am wrong .
:yeahthat: but I think a big con is that they are born in the first place
The only pro of the dwarf gene is a cosmetic one - it usually creates a smaller size, tiny little ears, and a rounder cobby head and body that most people think is cute, but Mini Lops are pretty cobby without the gene and Brittania Pettit are the smallest rabbits there are and they are not dwarfs.
IMHO I think Europe has the right idea in discouraging the dwarf gene and encouraging people to weed it out with a goal to banning it.
So, here's some links to the photos I took of my first peanut. I linked them, just cuz. I found them on my fb when uploading a new photo. I thought you might like to see them. They're not gory or anything, but they are a deformed baby rabbit, which some people might not like to see.
If you have a litter with one.. you will notice it right off the bat. Not the same as a runt.. THEY just look weird and will not eat.. well some has,, just not for long. You will get them in netherland dwarfs, Holland lops ,, and a few others that I cant think of right now.
Jersey Wooly, Mini Rex. I have not gotten any yet, from the hollands, woolies or MR, but... that's because from the number of large kits I get, I suspect the bucks in this case, are false dwarfs.
