I have made all my cages 24" tall as I want to make sure my rabbits have plenty of room to stretch (and mine seem to have a propensity for climbing as well). I just finished built a some new cages and I am considering adding a second "floor" across part of the cage to add a bit of entertainment value and even more floor space.

I could make the second floor out of floor wire but it would be nice if the "second floor" could also function as a resting board but be easy to clean.

Ideas?

Thanks for the help!

on this thought, any suggestions for something to buy that creates an inexpensive platform (preferably not attached to the cage)? I want to be sure and give our doe a place to get away from her little ones when she needs a break as they get a bit older. She got annoyed with them the last litter when trying to start weaning them. I'm thinking a wire storage shelf (like might be put in kitchen cupboards or something) but haven't found a sturdy one the right size.

I used a 1.5' wide section of floor that goes along the back of the cages. I have it in each of my maternity cages almost 1.5' above the floor. The girls like to lay in that 6" what is left and the kits can't get up there until they are ready to be weaned.

You could use 1/2" conduit to make floor supports slipping through the wire so it sits on and not attached (creating a shelf). Zip tie the wire floor to it so it can't move it is what I would use. Just what I would due.

-- Tue Jan 20, 2015 2:15 pm --

If worried about them chewing ties use resting mat over ties.

This is one of my doe's cages. I used what wire I had laying around. The cages are 4ft long by 2ft tall. I placed the shelf 1ft up.

If your looking for something that can double as a nest and shelf, then you could try an old milk crate (clean carefully):

I made mine with a 1x12 wooden shelf for them to perch on,and it is comfortable for them, -but some rabbits poop up there and it is just one more thing to clean, -- so maybe some of the other ideas mentioned are a good idea.
