Cinnabun just delivered a litter of 5 (had hoped it would be bigger, but oh well) and one of her kits still had its umbilical cord attached to the placenta. i snipped it with a pair of scissors and blood came out of the placenta but the rabbit itself wasn't bleeding badly. should i put a dab of Neosporin on the severed cord and should it be fine? i've never had a rabbit born with its umbilical cord and placenta still attached. not sure if i did the right thing by cutting it.

I don't know either. Is the kit still bleeding from the stump of the cord? If so you may need to tie it off with thread or cauterize it. I hope someone who has experience with this will post.

good point OAF. didn't think of that.
went back in and checked it, not bleeding at all anymore. put a dab of neosporin on it just in case, since my scissors weren't sterile. hopefully i didn't do anything irreversibly bad...

I'm sure the little guy will be fine. The neosporin will work to kill the bacteria. I'd be more worried about mum licking it off.

his mom has plenty of experience with that :p i've been putting neosporin on her feet for sore hocks and she's probably ingested more than what would be considered safe. but that was a couple weeks ago and she's been fine since.

IF you think about, mom usually chews it off so it should be fine.

Actually, one of those papers I posted about rabbit reproduction said that the cord breaks off by itself. Which makes sense, because it is always gone right at the navel- whereas when a dog or cat chews the cord off there is usually a stump attached.

Dip the cord in betadine or iodine and you shouldn't have any problems. :) Hopefully it will snap off at the navel shortly.

You are correct- but usually when people cut umbilical cords they leave a stump, so that was the picture I had in my mind's eye!
