Day 30 today! All the hay eating and playing with it is over for her - this morning we went out and found a really well constructed nest! No fur yet, and only Velma has built hers so far. Daphne put all the hay she didn't eat or drop through the floor of the cage down into the nest box, but she hasn't constructed the nest as yet.

We were so busy with the garden this last month that we forgot to figure out a box to slide into the Sani-nests! When we realized that this morning I started looking around the house for ideas - I have a bunch of rectangular bamboo (I think) boxes (baskets, really) with lids, and the largest of them were almost the perfect size to fit inside the nest box! The baskets were too tall, so DH cut the top off to shorten, then it was a pretty great fit inside the cardboard layer in the nest box. They are just a bit short, so to keep them from sliding around we put a 2x4 between the end of the box and the little door that drops down. We very carefully moved Velma's nest into the basket and then replaced it in the Sani-nest.

Funny that Velma built hers first, since we bred Daphne in the morning and Velma in the evening, so Daph should be about 8 hours ahead of Velma. I guess they do things in their own time! There are some more cecals under both cages, and neither doe ate much of their pellets last night, but they also didn't dig any out that we can see. They didn't dive right into their grain mix last night either, so it appears they have the characteristic drop in appetite as well, though maybe they will still finish their pellets before feeding time this evening.

This is her nest before we meddled with it - looks like she did a great job for a first timer!

We carefully slid out the cardboard liner with the nest - I'm so glad we had put this in before she made the nest :D

This is the basket that I already had - I don't know if we will be able to disinfect these later, but they are 9 years old so I think I got my money out of them -

DH did a good job transferring the nest, I think. I really hope that it doesn't disturb her that we messed with her nest!

We went ahead and put the cardboard lining back in too, though I think it's probably overkill as far as insulation. It did seem like it made the basket fit just a bit better, with no space for a kit to fall in between. I think a kit who got out might have fallen between the basket and wire nest otherwise should it be able to get out of the nest.

Nice nest Velma! Way to go :clap2: Both of my does that just recently had litters didn't pull fur till right before having the kits. I came home from work and the first one had fur and babies and then with the second one this morning everything seemed fine and normal last night and then there was fur and babies this morning. But both does had nests at day 28 as soon as the boxes went in ;)

Are these first time does?

Yes, these are both first time does, and the first rabbits we've ever owned. They are 5 1/2 months old right now, and this is also our bucks first time breeding - he's ten months old now. First time for everyone all the way around, and I hope we get a big dose of beginners luck!

Our girls started digging in their pellets last Saturday, so starting Sunday and every day since we've been giving them both big stacks of hay to play with. They ended up eating most of it every day, and anything they didn't eat they put down in their nest boxes - we have the subterranean nest boxes. I'm getting ready to go work in the garden and will check on the way down to see if Daphne has put together her nest yet. When we were down there earlier her nest box was about 75% full of hay, but just laying in there, no nest.

What an awesome nest! :p And I love the basket!

Thanks! No fur yet, and Daph hadn't built hers, so I went ahead and built one very similar to Velma's. Nice that I had a model nest to copy!! Velma has already chewed the basket a little, but if she gives us meaty babies that's ok with me!

Haha, for sure! Pretty sure they both are, since they've both done everything the same this week except that Daph didn't build a true nest. Neither one was at all interested in their grain mix, when they previously had dug into like they were never going to be fed again. Both of them didn't eat their pellets last night/today either - maybe 3 oz, and not much hay. Hoping for some popples tomorrow!!

Good job, Velma! :p

Hoping for two nice litters for you! :good-luck:

Woot! Go bunnies!

Make sure to post popple pics when they come!

I will! I think I have the most photographed rabbits in the state - I am a camera junky! I take pictures of my vegetables as they grow lol. :p I was actually making fun of myself for posting four pictures of a NEST last night.

DH just got back from checking - no kits yet!

Angel had hers about 7:30am 3 days ago. She let me watch that time. Maybe Velma will have hers later today or maybe early tomorrow.

I read that rabbits usually deliver around the same time of day as when they were bred. Not sure if that's true - maybe sometimes, but then all rabbits are unique! We bred Velma around 10:00 am or so, and Daphne was around 5:00 pm I think. So maybe they will deliver around then! Or not, but that would be awesome because we will be outside working in the garden today.

That's great that your doe let you watch - did you get pictures?
