I have been using pex pipe for my automatic water system, as freezing does not shatter the pipe like PVC systems, I threaded the nipple waterers directly into the pipe for each rabbit-- now 3 years into the project the nipple waterers are mostly dripping around the threads in the pipe, -- it seems that freeze and thaw has pushed the nipple waterers out and damaged the threads, so that just screwing them back in does not seal any more, -- I did get some to seal by using teflon tape around the threads on the waterer, but a "fix" is in order.
-- so-- I bought some 3/4 pex tees and end plugs with the idea of threading the nipple waterers directly into the end plug, -- but when I drilled the hole I discovered that the metal was much thinner then it looked, -- so-- I heated them up wiped a little flux inside and melted about 3/16 inch of lead free sodder inside the end plugs, -- then drilled and tapped them, I used a 1/8 inch pipe tapered tap, -- it worked like a charm .
--- so here is a picture of the parts before it is installed into the system--

I should mention that I do drain the system if it is supposed to be below 15 degrees F , [to reduce the risk of splitting the brass fittings], -- so far I have had no fittings damaged by freeze expansion. -the system functions very well for most of the year.
