I am extremely perplexed. The course I am currently taking; Reproduction of Plants; I have been stumped with questions on color genetics for rabbits. Err... Anyways, can only help?

1: brown fur (B) is dominant, white fur (b) is recessive for the rabbit species. In this case, a purebred brown rabbit is crossed with a purebred white rabbit. What is the gene pair symbol for a purebred brown rabbit? BB, Bb, bB or bb

2: What is the gene pair symbol for a purebred white rabbit? BB, Bb, bB or bb

3: When a purebred brown rabbit is crossed with a purebred white rabbit; what percentage of the offspring are brown? What percentage are white? And what percentage have a hybrid trait for fur color?

Since 'B' brown is dominant to 'b' white, a rabbit with the genotype 'BB' or 'Bb' or 'bB' will look brown and a 'bb' rabbit will look white.

the purebred white will have a genotype 'bb' and lets assume the purebred brown has a genotype of 'BB' (although it should be made clear by your teacher  )

you need to make a punnette square to see what these two bunns will produce.

Brown? Do you mean wild rabbit agouti or brown as in brown chocolate color?

Brown is only dominant if the brown rabbit does not carry the white gene. Then the white masking color will dominate any rabbits that get both genes.

__________ Mon Dec 24, 2012 4:18 pm __________

Bunnies have quite a few more color genes to fill in than plants, and they are not independent of each other.

It looks as tho the genetics class is quite basic.

In reality Brown color is a whole different gene than white...
Brown is in the Agouti locus AA
White is Lack of color cc
There are several genetic discussions here that could give You a lot more detail...
