On June 24 our female lion head had 6 babies. She is single mane (with very little mane) and is all white with brown spots along the back. The male that we bred her with is a white double mane. He has Blue Eye Whites (BEW) in his family line. We are hoping that 3 of ours are BEW!

Here they are at 5 days old......

Any guesses as to the color of the first one and/or what they might be able to be sold for? They are not pedigreed.

I'll note next to each of them what we think they are....

Kit #1 - Double Mane, Male? Not sure of color – Maybe black or gray?

Kit #2 – Double Mane, Female? All White

Kit #3 – Double Mane, Female? White with gray spots/ears

Kit #4 – Double Mane, Female? All White

Kit #5 – Single Mane, Male? White with black spots and eyeliner

Kit #6 – Double Mane, Female? All White

Oh, my! Aren't they adorable!! I love baby pictures!

I am not very familiar with lionheads. Do you mind explaining what is meant by single or double mane (I am assuming that it has to do with more or less long fur around the head, just wondering how you tell which is which)? Also, how do you know which are single and which are double in such young kits?

Thanks for posting pics so we can oooo and ahhh over the babies!

Could you also post pictures of the parents?

You say the sire has BEW in his pedigree but is he a blue eyed white as well?

The first kit looks shaded to me - possibly a Siamese sable

FHJMOM - If you look at the last picture you can see a lot more white along the back. The leg (back leg) is pinker. See that? My wife has been reading a lot about them and found a bunch of things online that say those will be "Double mane".

If you look at the 2nd to last picture, you will see that it's is uniformly white, so it will be a single mane.

DOOD - I'm on my way to work now, so I don't have time to take a picture of mom, but will later today. The male belongs to another lady. I don't have pictures of him but he is pedigree and double mane with BEW in his line (he doesn't have blue eyes himself).

Does the mother have BEW in her pedigree?

If the sire is not a BEW then it is more likey the kits won't be either and are likely red eyed whites like their father.

Vienna (the gene that creates BEW) is recessive so both parents must carry it to create BEW kits and then only 25% of the litter should inherit the Vienna gene from both of them and be BEW's the rest will not get the gene or secretly carry the gene - called "Vienna carriers" and if they have white spots on them they are called "Vienna marked"

However, statistics doesn't always follow the numbers and you could get 3 out of 6 BEW kits from two Vienna carrier parents - it's just less likely.

DOOD -

I don't recall the color of the eyes of the father, but I don't think they were red. I'm almost certain that they weren't. They seemed like a dark color.

The female doesn't have a pedigree. That doesn't mean she wasn't pedigreed, we just didn't get it if she was.

I believe they should open their eyes in a week or so and they we can see (my wife is the expert on all of this).

Here is a very quick cell phone picture I took on the way out of the house of the female (mom). Sorry it's not the best because I was in a hurry.

 that doesn't make sense since ....
The male that we bred her with is a white double mane.
there are only two all white rabbits - blue eyed white and red eyed white

However, there are several light coloured rabbits that are not white but cream or flecked with grey, or mostly white rabbits who have dark areas on their feet or nose or are a heavily marked broken with just eye rings.

It is hard to tell if your doe is a broken Siamese sable or a very dark broken tort.

Once the kits get a bit more fur, and their eyes open :) , it will be easier to determine colours.

In Arizona Lion heads go for $40 to $50 each with or without pedigree. Look at your local ads Craigslist ect. You want to be competitive but not too cheep. People expect to pay for quality.

You know I've always wanted to live in Florida. I'll check their Craigslist and see what Lionheads and Holland Lops go for (hopefully the same or more than AZ)....... If so I see a future career for myself SOON!!!!

I breed lionhead rabbits in New Mexico. My prices are $55 for pet quality. My showable pedigreed rabbits sell for double that easy.
