I bred my castor rex to a broken tort lionhead and it looks like I have a broken black otter kit.
The sire is not an otter, he has dark ears and nose.
So is it possible that the dam is Aat?
The week old kit who looks broken black otter:

He has no belly spots so just the ears and nose are tan.
And Fatty(she needs a name lol) looks like she's a blue otter(I don't know whats up with her??? lol). I was expecting 50% chestnuts and 50% broken chestnuts!

The joys of not knowing whats in their back grounds!!!
Can I link this here? This buck is my dams full brother http://grandeprairie.kijiji.ca/c-pets-o ... Z460546065

Could be that the mom is a torted otter. I love blue otters...how pretty!

Yup, looks like the tan gene at work in the broken black. The brown in the ears, around the nostrils shouldn't be found in a true black kit.

I am on the fence with the blue, I still think she may be opal and not blue otter but time will tell.

The statistics of genetics really didn't play by the rules in this bunch! Watch the next litter be all solid castors!

Having a chinchilla brother doesn't help much and just means your Rex may carry this gene as well! If bred to a REW or himalayan (California marked) it 'should' show up.

Congrats on the cute. Yes, Castors can carry just about anything, because agouti hides all. My castors carry otter, chocolate, dilute and REW all in the same rabbit. Won't know about the dilute until it's old enough for the tan triangle to grow on the neck. My otters have no tan triangle at birth, but that spot is naked skin until the tan grows in, that's how I tell the otters from the castors in the same litter.

The last litter I had with Scream, castor to broken black, I had 5 blacks and 1 broken black. Screams last litter had 3 blacks and 2 REWs. No castors at all from the Castor dam!!

I love when hidden genes do this lol! I know a lot of recessive traits can be carried and pop up like this. I was expecting a clutc of all normal cornsnakes and I got 3 blood reds and a caramel.
I can't wait to see what happens next. I have a litter from the same buck bred to a dutch or vm black doe. So I can't wait to see what goes on there!

On the other hand, I hate surprises. This herd is closely bred to flush out recessive genes. I can just about tell you exactly who carries what in the Rex herd. I like to play by the rules to keep it as predictable as possible.

From a castor doe I got a whole rainbow, silver marten, black, blue and opal otters, chocolate and black chin, red and amber. Have fun with your genes :)

Well more color in today! Looks like 3 broken black otters(all have brown inside their ears, the two on the right have a faint tan color coming in) and Fatty patty is getting in some brown ticking in(finally lol). So Opal right Blue + Agouti.
It's funny no castors/chestnuts!
Genetics fairy is being a meany lol!

the lighter tan ears with that light of body marking could be castor/agouti. Agouti/castor can hid otter as the marking are almost the same.

The body colour is definitely black and not agouti (or Steele) as the ticking would be noticeable by this age, you can see it coming out in 'Fatty'. A castor/agouti with a hidden tan gene would still look like a castor/agouti.

Yep, once that kits furs out the difference is obvious.

I wonder if some of the broken blacks are steels. They all have the tan in the ears
Fatty is finally getting her ticking in:
