I was looking for some info, but its rather difficult to find! So, I was hoping someone here might be able to help. Here it is: I have what I believe to be pure new zealands, i bought them from a breeder, but at time of purchase i didnt request paperwork for them, didnt think i would need it. Wow how hubby can mess up plans, as now he wants to register the rabbits. However, we cant do that since the breeder i got them from didnt keep any records of the sale, so he cant tell what rabbits are the parents of my 4 diff rabbits. So ok. I have 1 buck (who has an ear number, no arba number though), 3 does, the does are all diff colors, and the buck matches one of the does. Now, in order to get pedigree i have to have 3 generations. Will it be frowned upon to breed the father to the daughters for 2 gens to get the 3rd gen? The only reason im asking this, is Inbrthe only breeders for them are at least 2-3hrs away from me, and i really dont want to waste all that gas/money/time (i drive a jeep, gas aint cheap) so im trying to figure out any other options. Im mostly breeding for meat, but i figure 4H kids will probably do shows with them.

Please let me know what you think, whether it be good bad or indifferent ^_^

Linebreeding and inbreeding is perfectly acceptable with rabbits. I would keep a couple bucks from different does from the first generation so when you breed the original buck to his daughter you have a half brother to breed the next generation from. That way you wont have your buck showing as Sire, Grand Sire, and Great Grand Sire.

There is actually a linebreeding/inbreeding chart in the guide to rabbits that the ARBA sends to new members. Reportedly, you can inbreed rabbits up to 8 gen w/o ill affects, and if you are breeding for show, it's recommended not to outcross to much if at all.

I've read here and other places that with rabbits, 20 generations before you get bad side effects.

As MommaSheepSheep (lol) said... Keep a couple sons from the different does and use them on 'other than their mother'does... this will aid in keeping a bit of diversity in the lines as You work to a full pedigree.

( with apologies to MommaSheepDog )

The big thing to remember... is to select the Best of each breeding to use for the next generation of breeders. Inbreeding will multiply both the Good genes and the Bad genes. It will quickly show just what is in the genetic mix. ... just something more to try and remember.....

BAAA.

Please spare me your apologies, RR!

I am laughing too hard to accept them at this time.

Not a problem, my motto is breed the best, eat the rest.

Does that criteria apply to the GSD's as well? Niche market?

HA!

If only it was that simple :) With these guys, all the running they do would make for tough meat :0

I can't breed my dream litter of GSD's because I don't have any room to keep a pup back, or a litter for that matter. With the rabbits, I can just breed for myself, and whatever I can't keep goes into the freezer.

Thanks for the info! I am thinking of joining arba, and the new zealand club, but didnt want to do it empty handed. I was afraid of the inbreeding because of ill effects that I have seen in other animals (i have a mentally handicapped cat that was a product of father to daughter, everyone says i should breed her because the mentally handicapped cats are soo freaggin cute, she looks like she has down syndrome. I wont do that, but am afraid she wont live through the surgery, guess its a good thing i dont keep cats that arent fixed! well, other then her)

But now knowing that theres actually a chart out there, that will make it so much easier. I was planning on keeping a few from the first litter of reds that I have, as the does i have now werent handled much (got them fully grown), and as silly as this is, im afraid of rabbits biting (stems from a vicious childhood rabbit i had.. buffy) so i wanted to get a more hands on rabbit that wouldnt be afraid of ppl, and hopefully not be vicious. My bunnies have not opened their eyes yet, and they are 9 days old now, and mama has actually let me touch her without freaking out, so ive been able to hold the babies and she hasnt killed them. Now i just have to keep the records of each bunny... i think i may need more cages LOL hubby is going to be so "happy"

Once again, thanks for the input, it really does help!!

I have a bunch of barncats, and they inbreed/linebreed all the time, and we have never had any "handicapped cats"- except for some of the manx, which are prone to lower GI problems if they have very short or no tails.

You will be pleased with the attitudes of the baby bunnies that you are handling- it makes a big difference. I have one doe named Evil Blue, and I was afraid she would teach her nasty ways to the kits, but they are all friendly also. I am happy to report that Evil Blue is much more mellow and on her way to earning a new name. Maybe Irritable Blue... :? Don't worry, most of them are not like your Buffy the Vampire Bunny- and even they can get better over time! :)

Post some pics soon! I don't think we have many NZ reds in the RT herds.

What color is the buck and what color are the does? Mixing red and black (or blue or white) can give you unacceptable colors in the first generation and sometimes second unless you select very carefully.

Only white, black, red and broken (spotted black or spotted red) are acceptable for registration, so you'll want to stick with those accepted colors if you intend to register the offspring down the road.

Well, the Buck, named Bucky is Red, and he's the one with the tat, and in my opinion a rather nice looking rabbit altogether. I love his round head verses the long triangle head of the girls:

This is our Doe Cinnamon, her very first night at our place, and she gave us our first litter less then 2 weeks ago, im very curious to see how the colors come out on the babies, some are nice and red, the others are light red, guess we'll see what happens though:

And here's Sugar and Pepper, the first night we got them, they are not in that cage, but i had to get them out of the carrier:

I want to register the reds first, because thats what im expecting will be a popular bunny color. The others i will wait on ^_^
