I got this little Rabbit from the pound when I picked up my Creme D'Argent's.
Still trying to figure out a name for her. Here she is0919021531.jpg
She is a very sweet but scared Doe. My daughter thinks she was bred before but I don't know how to tell. I went to trim her nails yesterday and I am so mad at her previous owner. Some of her nails were real long so I trimmed those up. The others someone trimmed up close to her skin. Just basicly wacked them off. :x How could someone do that? no wonder she is so scared. The little bit of nail that is out past the skin looks real bad. Could this of damaged her nail growth? They look stunted. You think after doing one or two of the nails this short the person would of noticed all the blood. Poor little thing has over 3/4th of her nails are done this short. She was terrified when I was working with her nails but did not fight me. I gave her a nice brushing and she is shedding like crazy. Under the fur that came off is the most beutiful pattern. :) What color is she? She was going to be my 17 year old daughters but she will attack daughter and hates her. :gun: So now she is mine. ;) I just love her. If I had a bigger house I would bring her inside. I am figuring she was probably owned by a teenager. I am so glad I was able to get her. I figure she must be a very strong rabbit to survive getting her nails cut that short. My daughter named her Lucille but that name does not fit. I name my rabbits after the characters from the Redwall books so am thinking this little one deserves a Badger name. :muscles: Will let you know when I chose. Until then I will just call her little one. :lilbunny: I am so glad she was taken to the pound so I could get her. Whoever owned her did not deserve her.

If her other nails were really long, chances are they were NEVER trimmed and she broke/tore them off on the floor wire... :( Just curious, you ARE quarantining these rabbits after bringing them home from the pound, correct? Who knows what kind of nasties they were exposed to there... :x She is a pretty little thing...

i agree with OAF. the nails that are short were almost certainly broken off. and i would definitely advocate quarantining, especially since she's probably stressed and its more likely that if she has anything it will surface soon.

I agree that she probably broke her nails herself. They may grow back oddly. I know that if you cut a cat's claw too close to where it widens out, they will grow back thickened and kind of "clubbed".

Make sure to keep her well away from your other bunnies- with her being so nervous, if she is carrying any illness it will be brought out due to stress. I hope she soon relaxes in her safe new home! :)

new rabbits are quarrentined. I think they were trimmed short as why would only a few not be short? I wonder if they were trimmed maybe someone lost their temper when she scratched them. That is what my mom mentioned. Luckly this pound is not like most pounds. It has a lot of volunteers and it was very nice and clean. The rabbits were set up in those plastic rabbit hutches that are used by a lot of pet rabbit people. They were very clean. The room was the cat room which looked real nice. I never saw a shelter or pound so nice. I took home all their rabbits. Do you know what color she is? Is she a ND cross?

She looks like an opal to me. I don't know her breed- could you get a weight on her? She may big a BUD (big ugly doe), but her ears are very long for a ND.

Tell her no offense calling her a BUD- she is quite pretty- and BUDS are used for breeding because they kindle easier. :)

When I picked up the others I could not leave her behind. No offense taken MSD. She is a pet and will not be bred. Daughter wanted to breed her to her Woolie and I said "NO". I wish I knew more about her. Oh well I will just enjoy her. Do opal's have intresting patterns on them?0926021755.jpg

Dolly for her name? She looks so sweet. Glad you saved her. :D Oh, just saw Redwall books and Badger name, not sure what that is, but she looks like a Dolly.

Dolly is a sweet name. I am naming my rabbits after Characters in Brian Jaques books. In the books there are Badger Lords and Ladies who are strong protectors of right. So I figured she deserves a Badger name instead of a Hare name.

Of course she does! I am going to look into those names for the 5 babies we will be naming.

After much searching and thought I chose a name for my little one. Bella Brockhill. :D Bella of Brockhill is a great character in quite a few Redwall books. :reading3: What grabbed my attention to this name is she was a peaceful Badger :grouphug2: until need arose. :jedai: Very wise. She was the longest lived Badger in all the series. :eek:ldgeezer: So here is too Bella Brockhill may she live long and happy. :beer2:
Here is a little tidbit about the character. She was put on a list for most liked Redwall Characters.
Bella of Brockhall
Species: Badger
Appears in: Mossflower, The Legend of Luke, Outcast of Redwall
Reminds us of: Shaq
Why she's on the list: The badgers are the most kick-butt species in the world of Redwall, and Bella's probably the most likeable of the bunch.

As you can see I love choosing names for my buns. Some get more thought than others.

The pattern you see in her fur is because she is molting and also some of her fur is "sunburnt". Once she molts it all out, you will have a better idea of her true color. Not a ND, I don't think...Polish mix maybe?

__________ Thu Sep 27, 2012 11:29 am __________

It has nothing to do with the cleanliness of the shelter or pound, but what germs the animals there may be harboring. Remember, they take in all kinds of animals that have not been take care of properly. And make sure to care for the quarantined animal LAST...you can harbor germs on your skin and clothing, and carry it to your other animals.

I think it is VERY likely that she broke the other nails off and only a few were left. If they trimmed them, why leave some long?

I think they were trimmed short as why would only a few not be short?

why would some be really short and others long?

well...it all depends how many are caught by the wire and how many aren't.

Based on experience the ones the tend to catch are the middle ones on the back feet, and the corner ones on the front. Don't know why, just is. Don't like 'em which is why I trim them regularly. :)

but it's no mattering, as of now, she's in a home that will care for her properly.

as to her breeding...she could be almost anything.

lionhead mix, holland lop mix, dwarf mix, whatever. She could even be a horrendous variety of meat rabbit (horrendous only in that she is small).

I went and took a look at her to see if it was as bad as I remember. It was a shock to see yesterday. One back foot is real bad almost cut down level with toe. The other foot was left alone. The front paw ahead of the cut back nails have about 3 cut. The others are not so bad. So less than 50%. Still quite shocking. The way they were all down so even made me think someone did it. I cant see a rabbit getting only its back left foot caught and some of the left paw. does not make sense but oh well. I have her in a nice cage behind the house. She seems happy I moved her out of the quartine cage which was small and moved her to a bigger hutch behind the house. I plan on setting up more rabbits there in the future. I guess she is my dwarf mutt as she is about the size of my daughter jersey woolie. Held and played with her after rabbit chores were done and she is calming down faster.

My herd sire, show buck, broke off only ONE nail, but all the way down so that it was a DQ. In the meantime, the CL buck I got with inch long nails, showed no signs of ever breaking off a nail.

The thing is that all the nails on that paw were broke off all the same not different lenghths. confusing.
