On Aug. 30 I had a litter of Holland Lop kits born to my broken sable point doe by my solid tort buck. There were four kits born; 1 broken tort, two sable points, and one little mystery kit.

The genetics of both parents are as follows:

(dam) Broken sable point doe: aaBBc(chl)_Ddee

(sire) Solid black tort buck: aaBBC_Ddee

From a genetics point of view, I don't think this match should produce anything darker than a black tort, but this kit seems too dark to be a tort. Does anyone have any idea what color this might be or if it is just a very dark tortoise shell? Neither parent carries the extension gene (E) so there is no way it can be a blue, black, or siamese sable, so what else?

Thanks!

*edit* Yes, I am sure of the genotypes I filled in.

*edit 9/10/12" Updated pic of the "mystery kit". I'm thinking maybe just a dark tort...

Are you sure about all of the letters you filled in? Instead of both being BB, perhaps they are Bb, and Bb, and that is a blue? just sayin?

Perhaps a black or black otter? Here's a link to a page that shows Hollands as kits and as they develop.

Could be black but can't be an otter. First, it has no tan markings, which are like agouti markings, with white inside the ears, and a pink/tan spot on the back of the neck. http://www.gbfarm.org/rabbit/holland-colors-tan.shtml

Second with the tort/sable point genes, you won't have the at otter gene, unless the sire is really tort otter, but on a solid tort that would be obvious, in which case, the genetics would be aatB_C_D_ee, and that changes the whole equation.

Could be siamese sable though

These can be tricky! Shown left to right: Orange, Siamese Sable, Broken Opal, Blue, and Black Tort kits at 9 days old. The Siamese Sable and Blue look identical at first, but then the SS gets a shimmery cast to its coat (note the shimmery cast on the kit in this pix). Then it develops white ticking almost on the ends of its hair. It goes through several color changes before looking like a Siamese Sable.

__________ Sun Sep 09, 2012 4:29 pm __________

If it is I want it. I have a bk tort buck from siamese sable/ sable point/tort parents. Tried getting a siamese sale or sable point from a sable point doe, just got torts. Get torts from the tort doe. all I want is siamese sable/sable point kits!!!!
