We have a very large deck I have been letting my rabbit run around on to get some excercise, and I saw on the deck floor that a Redbud leaf had been half eaten, I don't know how many he ate, or if he only ate that half. Does anyone know if these are poisionous? The latin name is Cercis canadensis. What should I do it it is poisinous? If it isn't (for his well being first) I am hoping I can add it to his greens. Any one know?

Hi Jana, don't know about Redbud tree leaves but here is a list complied by one of the Moderators along with a list of what rabbits in the wild will eat. Redbud is on the most "damaged" list, so it seems as though rabbits like them. I would just observe your rabbit. Poop will tell you if it doesn't agree. Had the same reaction with Maple leaves when my rabbits were in their run. No problems from them and they enjoy nibbling on them when outside.

Regarding introducing greens, have you ever given your rabbit clover? Or wheat grass? Mine enjoy snacking on both. I swear by the wheat grass. Stimulates my rabbits eating and trace minerals are really good for them.

Hope this helps.

I googled Cercis canadensis toxicity and I suggest you do the same. It apparently is considered toxic, but I doubt the bunny ate enough to cause problems. The toxin is not easily absorbed in the digestive tract. I do not recommend feeding it to the rabbits, but I don't think the leaf it ate is likely to cause problems.

Considered toxic to fish, but then it's better safe than sorry. Your rabbit only ingested a bit of it, so could be all OK.
