My tree has produced a ton of them this year! We cannot keep up! My chickens have started to ignore them, that's how many keep falling! Dober eats them from my hand or the low branch if they are red/black. =D
But I'm wondering, can I collect and feed the berries to my rabbits?

Try to avoid giveing them any white/unripe ones though...they are mildly hallucinogenic at that point...so despite my roommate thinking bunnies hallucinating would be funny (I have mulberries here to and he keeps teasing me about it,wouldn't do it...just likes teasing me) it probably wouldn't be the best idea :p

CnB, you can feed the buns some mulberries but because they are quite sweet you will want to limit quantities, the same as with any fruit.

Why not look into some other human uses for mulberries. I'll bet you could easily make jam or jelly... Or maybe even mulberry wine. :) Wouldn't those be nice to have in your larder next winter! If you have freezer space, you can freeze them now and decide how to use them later.

I've only had mulberries once, back in the late 90s... a few picked off a huge, laden tree on a property I was thinking of buying. They were sweet and delicious. People who like blackberries and raspberries would likely enjoy mulberries as well.

Maybe I'll have to get a mulberry tree. :)

They are absolutely delicious! :dinner: Sweeter than bramble berries, too. :)

I have one weeping mulberry, and just bought three Pakistan mulberries, which get fruit that is several inches long. :p

We also have one non fruiting mulberry I bought when my brain was dormant.

I feed my rabbits Mullberry fruit on the branches with leaves. They love it. I don't like mullberries myself. They are sweet but the flys are attracted to them. They are usually covered. Hince I can not make myself eat them. Kids love them though. I also don't like how they stick to the bottom of shoes and track through the house. Stain terribly.

Uuuuuhhhhh.... it pollinates the others? :p

Yes, yes, I'll go with that.

*Ignores the fact that mulberries are self pollinating.*

I gave one to Jr, he finished his pellets from yesterday and ripped his feeder out. Was chewing on the bars to get me to hurry my butt up and feed him. He gobbled the berry down without a thought! =O Like a little berry vacuum!
Tree we have came with the house, it's old and big. I've never tried the berries, DH tried one last night and said it tasted like plants....so...yea.
That Mulberry with the long berries is crazy! They are like 8in long!

I recently got a "Free" mulberry tree from the city. I look forward to planting it soon. I'm excited to know that they are sooo good. :) I see jelly and wine on the horizon.

the berries are pretty good just make sure to eat the ripest ones...or well...yeah they will taste like plants :p I do second the part about them attracting flies though...we actually hacked ours down a lot to try to cut how many it brings in since we still haven't managed to get chickens to help with that yet :p

Mulberry leaves are a high protein forage from what I've read. Which is why I'm growing some up from seed. Figure humans, ducks, and chickens can enjoy the berries (or flies attracted to the berries in the case of the ducks) and the rabbits can have the leaves (with a few fruit). Trying very hard to grow more forage plants...trees and bushes especially.

Just don't plant those Mulberry trees close to your house. They get very large and spread out. The berries stain and it is a mess if anyone steps on them and then enters the house.

We have a ton of Mulberry trees and had to cut a few down that were too close to the house. The rabbits do love the leaves, branches and a couple rabbits like the berries. Have some that push berries out of the cage.
