This guy was received as a mini rex. He looks like a mini rex to me but I know nothing of the breed. What kind of quality (as best can be told from pics) is this guy and what color would he be considered? Thanks for any education I can get here :) - Kathryn

he looks brood sized from the pics.

really not sure what the colour he is...the more knowledgeable will have to chime in.

His frame looks good, not too long, nice wide shoulders, nice arch to the back. The standard calls for a maximum senior weight of 4.25 pounds for bucks so he may be too large.

I cannot comment on his fur quality but I believe the colour to be smoke pearl marten ( at _ B_ cchl_ dd E_) but Rex colours can be tricky to determine.

Coat quality looks ok, probably a little harsh, but it's hard to tell without touching it. And he looks like a lilac otter, a little baked or molting on one side, but the two are fairly close, do you have any other info? Smoke pearl is not an accepted color so it's less likely but not impossible.

It's a boy... thats about all I've got!! I got him from a guy who wheels & deals rabbits and I've no clue where he got it from. Some things he comes across are quality and others are 'insert breed here'. The bun was just so sweet I felt compelled to give him a nice place. Not knowing about minirex I didnt know if he was decent/crappy/somewhere in between and wanted to have open eyes about him. Also my mom wanted to know what color he was and I had no idea.

is there any tan at all on the back of the neck? It looks a little tanish on the side of the face

He is a smoke=pearl marten, which is an "otterized" shaded with a chin gene. He is also finishing a molt. His coat looks a little open, could probably do with more density, it may also be a little 'long" It shouldn't be longer than the width of a dime, if a dime disappears into his coat then it is too long. That colour is eye-candy

Thats a flashy looking fellow you've got there, I agree smoked pearl marten.

What a beautiful color!

Congrats on the find. :)

That's a handy tip! :) Thanks, Lauren!

yes, on the back of the neck is very light tan-white, belly is white also.
Thanks so much for the input from all!
So to summarize what I think I've learned so far: I have a mini rex that is somewhat larger than standard (will get a weight tomorrow) but that has good (or fair?) conformation, coat quality that is not as it should be (fair vs poor? hard to tell from pic I know)(I'll try the dime test tomorrow) and coloration that is probably smoke pearl marten and very pretty to look at but not a recognized color as of yet.

Thank you, that explains the bit of tannish on the side.

__________ Fri Apr 12, 2013 6:01 am __________

I maintain that they are not, if you are breeding recognized colors. There are many striking combinations out there, but if you aren't following color crossing rules, you are going to wind up with something that people have to guess at, like otterized- smoke pearl martin. I can easily identify all of the recognized colors, and most of them at birth. Seems like Devon's Mom can identify the unaccepted colors as well.

Fail on the dime test- right at the top of the dime. Weighed in over the limit at 4.9lbs.

Still very pretty, what are your plans for him:)

I am not sure yet- at the moment my thoughts are kind of wandering aimlessly and havent taken off in a direction yet. I have no master plan. any suggestions?
